Hoot can post photos what this looks like once he's done. Time will tell how long this filter material will last. With my sides sore I did not get the foam cut as even as I normally do, Hoot ought to be able to get a decent piece out of it.

Hoot, thanks for the figure reference.  I guess I am going to have to remember to trace this tube out the next time I have the tank off the bike.

It looks from the diagram you reference that the tube goes to item (4) No. 5 vacuum tube (from the 3 way joint), and the Remarks say "California only".  My bike does not have all the other lovely stuff required in California, so I still wonder... :???: :???: :???:

I went to the lawn & garden dept. at wal-mart and bought a lawnmower foam filter and cut one to fit..Also cut one for my weed-eat and chainsaw...still have some left...Just an Idea...Yes I did put a drop of oil on them...

The foam when it goes gets sucked in to the top of your carbs but does not reach the engine from what I have seen you will just find a little gunk persay on top of your diaphragms that the needle sets in.

Also no disrespect but DO NOT CUT the snorkle off anywhere it will only bring you grief many people have tryed including me. I removed the snorkle and it will fall on it's face it throws the jetting WAY off and you will be chasing the right setting all over not saying it can not be done but for regular riding it is more trouble than it is worth !!!!

Lawrence - Here is all you need to pay attention to on this discussion..
Actually looking at the picture now.. It looks like it plug in under the air box.. but I thought it was to the bottom part of the air cleaner box.. Anywayz.. The filter is in the box under the faux cover as indicated.

You're right Allen, I found mine on top of one of my carb diaphragms as well.  I was scratching my head trying to figure out where it came from first time I saw it.

I found the box, Hoot.   Trying to figure out the diagram, it looked like the draftsman intended the line from the filter box to tie into the line (4).  Now my curiosity is up, as to what this pathway actually accomplishes.

I have had my carbs out to replace the jets and shims, and did not notice any foam, goop, or anything untoward at all on them.  Of course that was some time ago.  Maybe the filter foam disintegrated in the interim.

Anyway, I am glad to learn about this arcane little filter -- I am off today to get some appropriate foam to go in the box.  I would really like to understand the thinking of the engineers that put this in place.

Hose 3 connects to the box, not (4)
Not sure where (4) goes or if it is Cali only...

No offense taken. I figured as much, but when I take the air box off and see those 4 big trumpets feeding individual carburetors and then look at this teeny tiny little snorkel that they have to breathe through the Mr. Hyde in me wants to come out and let them breathe.

But I appreciate the advice, I will try to refrain. ....sorry for diverting the topic.

DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT!  Alter your airbox, snorkel, or any part of the air intake system on your bike as you will NOT be happy when it does not run right from that point on or until you replace your airbox to factory sealed spec's!!!

TRUST ME ON THIS YOU DO NOT WANT TO DO IT!!!!!!!  Only mods you can really get away with is to replace stock filter with a K&N and that is it!  Unless you have an exhaust gas anylizer and dyno readily available and A LOT of carbs parts etc to get it back to correct air/fuel ratio's!
