I do this for a hobby and don't claim to be a professional...

The strict definition that distinguishes "amateur" from "professional" is whether you get paid for the activity, so in that sense, I suppose you don't qualify as a "professional".  In terms of quality of work, however, there is none better -- at least that I have seen.  I have already learned a great deal from you, and relish the opportunity to learn "hands on" in person.  Just give me plenty of "heads up" time so I can schedule it -- please.

I also checked with the high school paint and body guy.  He said that he could do it the first week of school.  They would do all the prep work also.  All it would cost me is the materials.  I have seen some of the work they have done. they do a great job.  They completed restored an Elcamino last year for the school.   Of course they have the paint booth and all that stuff.  Decisions, decisions, decisions.
I just need to take it apart and see what happens.  I appreciate all the time and offers from the group.  This is what it is all about, friendships and offerings.
Thanks guys for being there.  If I decide to let the school do it, I still want to have the paint session, wrench session, prep session or what ever we call it.  I would like to eventually do my own.

That sounds like a hard deal to beat, I'd go for it 8). Prepping and painting can't be rush if you want a good job..
we would really need several different stags of the paint process to get a good over all idea of what it intails to do a paint job from start to finish.  Repainting one piece or a touch up might be accomplished in a day but an entire paint job can take days if done right. I've got plenty projects laying around we can use and if anyone has a small project we can maybe work that in also. I'll post some of my projects pics if anyone is interested? I've been wanting to put them on a slide show anyway.

You don't like the blue???
I like the blue.  I have some scratches that need to be fixed and I like Pearl White.  I want to have a one of a kind bike also. hehe

Pearl White is pretty cool when done right.  First time I fell in love with a Pearl White (It obviously left a mark on me) was on a 1985 (in about 1987) Porche Carrera Turbo belonging to the lawyer father of a girl I was dating.  She actually showed it to me the first time sitting in her garage, while she wore nothing but a towel on her head and around her torso (fresh out of shower) and I actually ignored her for the car (for about 3 minutes!)  LOL.  Hmmm.  Guess she is the reason I remember that car so well.  LOL!!

So, today I went back to the car paint store where I bought the paint for "ole blue" -- they matched it perfectly, but by the time I bought the paint, the metal flake, and the two part clear coat, it cost me nearly $200!  I thought I was paying for the matching, but no,when I looked at the "Pearl White" from a 2000 automobile of some description, it came to $125 per pint!   About had a heart attack!  Surely there is some other place to buy quality paint, especially since I intend to clear coat it.

Stopped in at a Kelly Moore store and visited with a helpful clerk.  "Well, I can sell you an oil based enamel, if all you want to do is keep it from rusting..."

So question:  Where do you buy your paint?  What kind do you buy?  Oil-based? Acrylic? Something else? :-? :-?

This second bike needs painting, I enjoy painting, but I don't enjoy coughing up $200 every time I want to paint a bike...

PPG, I believe.  The pearl and metallic mixes are more expensive, and the reds are the most expensive.  The quote is for a pearl white.  Do you have a local shop where you buy your paint?

PPG is pretty good paint, have you looked into Sherwin Williams or DuPont?

Paint, pearl, hardener, clear and what ever else i needed to get mine painted ended up costing me $260.  You are right the pearl colors are alot more expensive.  It takes alot more time to keep the white clean than the blue and black.  The left side plate i have to clean almost daily.  The grease off of the chain gets on it black on white shows up.  hehe  I had one of the side plates come off and bounce down the highway.  I had used all the paint the first time to paint the bike.  I went back to the paint store and explained the situation and they mixed me up half a pint.  So this time it was only $75.  Still had clear and hardener from last time.  I pick up the side plates tomorrow.  We lost out in the playoffs so my weekends are free again so I will be doing some riding out here looking for some good rides for this summer.

I just repainted the CB900 since it's been in pieces for a year I figured why not....    My wife came up with a great idea,  We picked up a small pup tent from Wally World and I used it as my paint booth with a small blower fan attached up top.  It worked pretty well and only set me back 15.99

I've done cars with a "real" spray gun and rattle cans and this time I went cheap with DUplicolor rattle cans from AutoZone.  The color is awesome but the gloss isn't what I'd like.  In the case of the CB900 is was SO ugly before anything would be an improvement so I'm happy.    I'll probably redo it all when I finally find the rest of the Vetter setup and get her completely restored.
