I use Nason paint, and have been pleased. I will check prices at my local paint dealer today and post them, ...

According to what I can find on the Web, Nason is a DuPont product.  It apparently comes  in an acrylic and a urethane.  Charles, do you know which you use?  I have seen some reviews on cage forums that are favorable to the urethane.  Even located a distributor in Austin.

Also took advantage of a HF coupon to pick up what I believe is the same paint gun you use for $13 (+tax, of course) this afternoon.

I think I would like to use a red color with metal flake for the 2nd bike.  Do the "candy apple" colors sparkle with metal flake?  I can add flake to a clear coat if necessary.

I use Urethane basecoat/clearcoat, and Yes you can add red pearl or red metal flake to the clear, just make sure the size of the metal flakes will shoot with your gun.
A true candy apple color will require the three stage system, a base such as silver or gold metallic, then a translucent color  (usually multiple coats)then the clear. There are candy apple colors, but it's not the same as a Candy Apple paint job.
