Alright guys...i know there's many darkside posts already but I'm mechanically inept shall I say, and I'd like some great advice (that you guys always give).

Here are my current tire specifications -->

140/90B15M

Rear

C 70H
  Dunlop 49

407745 DOT DAK4 M77M

4803.

What darkside car tire would you recommend?

I'm not looking for high performance (high speed, super grip, etc..).

I'd like a wider tire.

Cheap please ($50-$120 range) I'd say.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

Dan... I don't believe you are going to be able to get a 90 car tire, I believe you will have to go with an 80 (not as tall).
Assuming you have some gap between your shaft and swing arm to your tire here are a couple of choices

BF Goodrich   Radial T/A
155/80 R15 83S RWL

UTQG: 400-A-B
only $76.40

Vredestein SPRINT CLASSIC

155 R15 82S
only $83.00

Go to:
www.tires-easy.com
You can enter tire sizes and see what they have..

This is where I go my tire from.. Only weird thing is the credit card charge was from Germany..
Other than that, they were fine.

Unless you are doing it yourself you need to line up where you are going to have it changed out.  Most if not all dealerships will not do it.  I found a small bike shop near my house that will do it.  Unless you have a great friend like Terry that has one and will help you do the tire with you.

I was able to accomplish the task with two tire irons I bought at Harbor Freight.  It is not easy, and I scratched the wheel with crowbars before I bought the tire irons

Funny you should mention this to Dan.. I also used HF tire irons, but
1) I dipped the ends in liquid plastic - that eventually popped off
2) I cut up a milk jug and used the strips to protect the rims..
Ahhh Milk jugs, there are a thousand uses for them.. Someone should write a book for men on the subject!!

If it don't move and it should, use WD-40, If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct tape, use milk jugs for everything else :D..

Were you ever in the Navy?  Sounds a lot like "If it moves, salute it, if it doesn't paint it!"

Well gang...

I called about 20 custom chopper shops in the Maryland area...

And these were the results:

Over half of them laughed at me on the phone saying they only work on Harley's ...REAL BIKES!

The other half said they wouldn't do it, and most didn't even know what Darkside was.

1 shop said he'd do it for $100.

And for the grand daddy of them all,

this shop

http://www.chopperdaddy.com/index.htm

at this number... 301-519-9234 in case you want to make a followup call.

The owner of the shop...Jackman...laughed at me, and kept me on the line for 45 mins...

telling me how stupid it was to put a car tire on the back of a motorcycle...

how dangerous it was...

and how all those guys on the valkyrie forums, and other metric forums putting car tires on the back of their motorcycles are the
dumbest ******* ***** ***** ever!

I tried to defend the reasons...

1) Longevity
2) cheaper
3) not so bad in the turns like many think

He refuted them all

and said I should buy a real bike (Harley and/or custom chopper)...with the most expensive best motorcycle tire i can buy.

I kinda wished I had you guys on a conference call since I couldn't really say much in the defense of the idea except for the fact that a lot of guys on valks/goldwings/big cruisers put car tires on the back of their bikes...and they have success with them.

The guy told me that he doesn't try to tell me how to do my job, so I shouldn't try to tell him how to do his.

Well, I didn't tell him on the phone, but custom chopper shops charge $$$$$$$$$$$$$ prices...so I mean, the blind shouldn't lead the blind!

I'm resolved to keep looking for someone who can help me to the darkside for the first time.  I'd like to try it out.

Someday soon, I'll probably be upgrading to a VFR 1200 anyway ;).

Your thoughts appreciated.

The world is filled with jerks, even at Christmas time.

I think you should report him to Santa.   Maybe Santa will cross him off his list...

In any case, cross him off your list, for sure.  You would not want anyone that boneheaded mounting a tire on your bike, of any type!!

You should have asked him how many bikes he has ridden with a car tire on it..
The answer would have been Zero.. So MR. I ain't got no experience in what we are talking about is talking out his posterior..

Here, let me sell you a Harley so that you can keep bringing it back to me so I can stay in business..

What City is your bike near right now???

I'm thinking I might have to take some vacation time, and ride to Texas.

Hopefully I can play it around a "wrench session"...

I'd like to do some serious wrenching ...maybe

steel brake lines
progressive springs
darkside rear tire
speedo

what else :P
