so i decided to install k&n filter for my 95magna,install went fine with a little cutting the edges a little to fit properly, manufacturing defect imo.also it only holds down two bolts?? stock unit holds down with i think 8,the front of the filter seems to me it could get Jared loose over time, poor design imo,i did take out the original gasket like the instruction says to

anyways after installation bike starts fine but running ruff as hell with some knocking, and cant get it past idle without stalling, even when pulling the choke, cant get any rpm's out of it what so ever

so put the original back on and runs like new again, seems to getting way to much air to me,the bike is all stock,no modes to the mufflers, the carbs haven't been shimmed as far i know, don't know how to be sure of that thou

from what i understand installing this filter does not require any mods to work properly or am i wrong? i stumped on this one!

use all the screws to secure the filter for starters. if the holes are not punched out all the way, take a screw and push it through, it will go. you shold have not had to trim the filter at all. you made sure to remove both old gaskets? there is an upper and a lower gasket. did you reinstall the snorkel? (ontop of the air filter lid)

you should be able to give it throttle and take off fairly well with the k&n, you may have some issues under full throttle launches where it can bog out and feel like it is running lean, because it is. after you install all the screws, etc, and you still don't like it but want to change it, you can up the pilot jets from size 40 to 42 and that issue should go away.

so what your saying is i need to install the original air filter case over the k&n filter??
the k&n only has two places to put screws to secure down
if thats the case i didn't do that,i thought the k&N replaces that, besides it has the old filter in there which is not really removable in the casing or is it

take the old filter out and replace it with the k&n filter yes the old filter comes out.

Also like has been said there are 2 gaskets you need to take out that were for the stock filter in the upper and lower housing and punch the rest of the holes where they line up..

yes, the stock air filter comes out with those two plastic clips on the side of the lid. the lid goes bac on over the k&n and all screws go back where they came.

see the pics below. the stock air filter has two clips, one on each side. it will come off after you unclip those. note the second gasket that needs to be removed as well as the stock air filter, then the housing goes on over the k&N.

maybe there are leaks where you trimmed the filter to fit.. not sure what you did, so it's hard to say.

no leaks there, that trimming was excess rubber on the radius corners where it didnt get timmed right from the factory

I ran K&N with fully stock set up for several years.. Other than the standard lull in hard acceleration between 3500 and 5000 rpm, the bike ran fine. (Had lull with stock filter too)...
It has been better with 105 main jets and needle work and I plan on installing 42's sometime soon..
I know it doesn't help you figure out what your issue is, but it let's you know the bike should run fine..
I wonder how many turns out your pilot jet screws are.. Maybe they are turned to far in..

I do not know your schedule but I will be working on my Valk Weds at a friends house if you are free you can ride down with me too his house and we can go over the Magna. Or if you like you could come by Weds evening and fix her at my place.

I think I remember how to work on a Magna    if the carbs need attention we can check them out. I will PM my number to you if you like call me.

Oh by the way I live in Conroe just up the road from you and my friend lives in Pearland..

I believe you oil K&N.

K&N's come pre-oiled (that's why they are pink/red).. When clean and not oiled they are white.
