I have a 95 magna, its been running great but lately there has been a loud metallic chain sounding noise coming from what seems to be the right side of the engine. Noise occurs in all gears but doesn't start until the bike is warm. Once it warms up it sounds like a chain or something inside is dry metallic shhhhssh sound.  I checked the oil There is plenty, i use 10w-40 Mobil one synthetic bike oil I changed it this sprring but this noise just started. Please help! I am on a road trip with thethe bike when it started and have only my portable tools and internet on my cell phone.

May be the cam chain tensioner I would think this could be fixed on the road temporarily by bending the spring when you get it out of the bike.

So it does sound like the whole top end is going out I can't figure out if it is the front one or back one hopefully I can get one in the next town since it has a honda shop. It looks like my simple mind will be able to handle the install.

It is most likely not the back one I can pretty much bet it is the front one as this is the one that goes the most it can be fixed on the road just have to get between the cylinders with a 8mm wrench save for the gasket it will come right out.

Think I can ride 100 miles to the next town before I tear in?

Does sound like a cam chain tensioner to me also.

I would want to get it changed out quick.  HOWEVER if I were out and needed to get somewhere to do it, I would keep  my RPM's LOW!  Not sure I would go 100 miles.

Yeah it should be fine for 100 just stay on the throttle while cruising no letting and and then accelerating the chain will have tension on it while under load and will sound worse when you are sitting there idling.

Alright I am going to ride nice and easy and take it apart asap tomorrow. I will start with the front.   I will let you know what happens. Thanks for all the advice.

Considering how many times I have gone through this I can say with confidence you can ride with it broken.  However, I would change the oil and filter as soon as you can after that.  The hardest part is finding something you can stick into the top screw to hold the tensioner in the "in" position until you get the assembly inserted back in and tightened down. A new tensioner comes with a small "T" shaped tool to use but anything you can get in there to hold it in after you screw it all the way in will work. Good luck.  I've been there  :)

I was thinking of changing the oil and filter when I fix it. Im having a hard time discerning the correct replacement parts on hdlparts.com the lifter assay looks more like the picture tutorial but they have another part called a tensioner doesn't look right.  Could someone maybe look up the correct part number please.
