Turn Signals Don't work at all (I think someone screwed with the harness)

I have an 86 Magna V65. I checked both the clymers manual and the shop manual.

The front signals work as running lights, but not as turn signals. I replaced the handlebar switch, but am having trouble determining which switch is right (I'm not the first owner).

I bought what I believed to be an 83 switch. Since that didn't look right, I bought a switch maked as an 86 (that at least matches the original switch on the bike). On the 83 switch the horn button is chrome colored. The original switch has a black horn button.

Here's what I find goofy. The shop manual shows a three wire connector to the headlight, the connector from the original switch is 4 wire (the blue wire is doubled).  Am I reading the manual wrong or is the signal switch wrong?

I checked all 4 turn signals, they work when power is applied. The relay behind the fuse box (behind the headlight) appears to work.

What are the obvious things I should look at?

If the switch works, shouldn't I at least get the rear signal to light?

I can't find a blinker in the harness, is there one.

Any advise you can lend would be appreciated.

Thanks. Baz

When you have them on as running lights do they cut off when the turn signal is applies. I have a 86 v45. the guy i bought mine from rigged some sort of by pass for my fuse box. My headlight has four two blue one green and some other color. The two blue are for high and low beam.

Thanks for the reply. So I guess at least the harness is right (and the manual is wrong - scary thought).

Unfortunately, nothing happens when I use the turn signal, so I'm befuddled.

I guess I'll just continue to screw with it. Is there an actual blinker? I'm guessing there has to be. Where is it on the harness, I'm seeing it noted on the wiring diagram.

Thanks. Barry

You can look in the Parts Diagram maybe under electrical and get an idea where the flasher unit might be located.

On a gen 3 the flasher is behind the cross bar just in front of the rear fender a little toward the right side...

That would be a 1st gen Magna.  The second gen was known as the "Super" Magna and was only produced for two years 1987 & 1988.  The 3rd or last/latest gen (so far) was made from 1993 - 2004.
