Anybody got any experience with these starters.

One of the guys in my group had his stuck engaged to the flywheel(?) and it blew up of course. Now two used starters later he is still fighting with this thing. The latest "replacement" had a large positive connector for the battery lead and a large negative marked connector. His original only had the large positive lead, which is what is shown on the microfiche from Honda (ground through the starter housing/ engine block). It is the correct part number, but looks different and doesn't work. The seller told him he didn't have reverse, huh. I told him that the starter probably doesn't turn in a reverse direction on any of the Goldwings to back it up. I have seen them with a lever that engages a reverse idler gear that the starter drives to back the beast up.

Anyway, there is something fishy about this latest "starter" and its two contacts in lieu of one.

Anybody got any ideas besides buy one from Honda ($600.00). Old one is not re-buildable.

The 88 & 89 year goldwing had 2 connectors all years after that only had one so the starter that you have probably came from a 88 or 89 year model. Go to Steve Saunders goldwing forum he has a DIY section that covers the 1500 starter repair.

there are about 15 or 20 starters for a 1500 Goldwing on ebay running from 60 to 200 dollars from used to new.

I know it's a reach,,, but I'm assuming this is not the same starter as on the Magna?  Only ask as I have one that's been sitting around for awhile that could use a good home.

Thanks for the info.

1) the starter that Pete got came from ebay (Goldwing King) and he was told the year model of the bike when the order went in. Apparently, GoldWing King doesn't know the difference between starters of different years plus making a comment inferring that the two connector starter was used for a reverse option and the single post unit was for "no reverse" option shows what an idiot this person must be. Crazy thing about this particular two post starter was it has the exact same part number and manufacturer's stamp on it that Pete's busted one post has on it.

2) I would have to check the michrofiche, but my guess is the starters for the Goldwings and Magnas are different.

3) I told Pete when he goes to get the next starter in this adventure to make sure the seller sends pictures of the darn thing showing that it has one post only.

Thanks for the information on Steve Saunders site. I will pass it on to Pete. This is his first GoldWing and he is going through the learning curve (as am I).

I knew you guys would come through with something useful.

Stay tuned
