I JUST did this to fix the exact problems you mentioned on Sunday and put 200+ miles Monday on the bike.  They worked perfect, as I wanted the risers to remain stock looking.  They are really just inserts where you use a larger bolt to connect everything.  Here's what I purchased.  http://www.zianet.com/genmar/h121.html  If you want to see close up pics of the finished product, I'll be glad to do that for you.

Dobie's risers from http://www.cycle-istic.com/ are sweet looking and ride really well too.  Think the risers are something he doesn't have "in stock" at the moment, but bet it wouldn't take long for him to make some.  Buddy of mine had them on his Magna until he changed bars a few months ago, so if you're interested, I think I might know where some well used and cared for might be for sale.

What "size" are you guys? I have numbness in my hands sometimes too, but also have carpal tunnel starting, I think. I was going to try some Kury iso grips or gel palm gloves first. I'm 5'10" but have pretty long ape arms. When I ride my arms aren't fully extended like I can't reach or anything, I wasn't sure what the risers would do, help or hurt.

I'm not saying you are proof of evolution, but you sure do have long arms . . . especially for being 5' 10".  I saw your pic in a different post and thought you were a big guy just based on your wingspan.  Do your knuckles ever drag the ground?

Seriously though, that carpal tunnel stuff hurts. I don't know what you were doing in the picture (maybe about to accelerate?) but it looks like your wrist is pointing up pretty high (notice the angle of your hand compared to your other arm).  I would think that might cause some discomfort.

About a month after I got my Magna I went on 400 mile trip in a 18 hour period.  Certainly not iron-butt distance but it was enough to give me tennis elbow.  I eventually had to go in a get a shot to fix it.  It bothered me for several moths until I did that.

I would also recommend the Vista Cruise control.  For about $30 it was hands down (literally) the best bang for my biking buck.  It took about 1 hour to install (much longer b/c I had to customize it to fit my grips) and works like a charm.  Its nice to flip it on and rest my hand.  Maybe something to think about.

At any rate, welcome to the forum.  Hopefully you will find these guys as enjoyable and informative as I do.  And I also hope you don't mind a little razzing from punks like me.  Just trying to make you feel welcome.  Be safe.  dc

I just had my lady do some measuring with a tape. NO, I measured my arms... :)
Fingertip to shoulder=33" and fingertip to fingertip=75"
Back in the day it was useful to "reach out and touch someone" but I'm smaller (and a little smarter) now and avoid those situations, if possible. I've lost about 50 pounds in the last couple years, a good thing as the weight all migrated to my waist. Anyway....
I have noticed the wrist angle before. I thought it was from riding with a finger or two on the lever, so I rotated my bars a bit, but I see I still do it. I was about to accelerate in the pic, but my wrist is always higher on the throttle side. :?:
Is the Vista the locking control? I've also looked at the throttle bosses and the black plastic wrap on ones too.

A throttle Rocker will help straighten out your wrist and take a lot of pressure off your grip. My hands used to go numb from my shoulders being to high, since I put the pullback style handlebars  on my bike, my shoulders are lower and the numbness all but gone. Bad wrist will diffently cause numbness, but don't rule out the shoulders. Just remember you don't walk around holding your arms out in front of you, and when your arms and wrist get tired I bet you drop them down beside you to rest them.

Yes it is.

Gotta second the above postings; Dobies Cyclistic Risers look terrific and reduced my  arm strain. I also had numb left hand after 200 miles on several  trips. I put the Cyclistics risers on, and rotated the handle bar back just a tad, then re-adjusted the mirrors/controls. No more numbness.
If you get a Mustang seat ; it'll put ya up and back an inch further than the stock seat and so the riser will definitely be a needed mod.
A cramp buster also helps with the right hand on long trips.
I messed with peg/risers/seat/windshield for several weeks till I got the right ergonomic mix to feel comfortable on 300+mile rides

The average person's wingspan is also their height, so you have a 5" reach advantage over most guys your size (read: is ufc in your future?).

I have a throttle boss/cramp buster and to be honest, I rarely used it.  Again, the vista cruise control (just a throttle lock) is what works for me.  My arms are longer than average being that I'm 6'2", so the handle bars are easy to reach.

Nonetheless, poor posture and long trips makes for a bad combination.  I know the police look a little weird sitting straight up, but thats what keeps them on a cycle for 8 hours a day.

I have a corbin seat that does drop me back an extra inch or so, but because it has a high lip on the back it really provides some support.  When I had the original seat I felt like I was sliding all over the place.  Good luck, dc.

I have a throttle rocker, or what ever it is called, and like it okay. I am thinking of getting another type but don't know the name of it. The one I have does work well, but sometimes, with a jacket or long sleeves on, the thing will get caught it my cuff. Also don't like the fact that it is always in the same position so it is in the way when not using it. It is nice to relax the fingers with the palm resting on the rocker.

There is one that says it will turn around the handle backwards, and grip when turned in the accelleration direction. Makes more sense to me that way. Easy to move out of the way when not needed or wanted in town when there is a lot of shifting going on, then spin it into position for the road.

Also have a throttle lock that I like on the Magna and may get one for the Shadow. The Shadow, being a v twin vibrates like paint mixer and my hands go numb berfore I even get to town, about 6 miles. It is easy to shake out the left hand, but with a lock, the same is possible with the right hand and that makes a big difference. I never leave it on long since I don't think that is a good idea.
Ride like you want to Ride tomorrow.

I have Kury grips (Flame'n) along with the throttle boss.  The throttle boss just needs to be positioned around 8pm to 9pm position.  Both do help.  It was when I changed to a Cobra Ladygunfighter seat that I had reach issues, since it pushes you back some.

I'll also agree, that if you tend to ride with your wrist in an upward position, you need to first work on that issue before buying inserts or new risers to resolve the pain issue; as you've got a long enough reach already.

So you don't think your the only one totally out of proportions, I'm 5'7" and have to wear a pants length of 34".  I'm all legs and no upper body.

WOW!!  Those are some long arms!!  :)

I put on the Kury Iso Grips and love them as they do seem to help alot with numbness.  I miss my throttle lock and was wondering if anyone else with ISO's has found a throttle lock that works well with them??

The only throttle lock I can find that says it is Kury compatible is $199.  Thats a little highter than the $30 I spent on the last one.  As far as the $199 throttle locks by Brakeaway, they do have an interesting feature, they hook into the brake lever for disengaging.

I put the standard vista throttle lock on my Valk with Kury Grips.  You have to put a longer bolt over to the handlebar mount and I believe I trimmed the locking ring a bit.  Works like a charm.

Um, yeah, another plus with the arms is I can tie my shoes without bending over.
I just purchased and installed a new Vista Cruise for myself. Had to trim the insert and move the master cylinder a bit, but seems to be OK. Those in the know...I have the acorn nut as tight as it will let me without hanging the throttle...definately don't want that to happen. How easily should I be able to move the throttle when engaged? IMO it could be a tad tighter but then the throttle is slow to return.
Thanks for the endorsement on those by the way, that's why I bought it!
