82 v45 Fork repair Shop recommendations (for a newbie)

Hello all.  I'm a brand new owner of an 82 v45 and I love the bike.  Looked very frantically for one Friday after selling my kawasaki and I may have purchased to soon.

After my 50 mile ride home from buying the bike I was thrilled.  However, went into the garage Saturday morning and saw what I dreaded.  A LEAK.  It took me a bit to realize it was coming from my fork.  I REALLY  want to get some riding done on this bike and I fear I don't yet have the expertise to make this repair.

Can anyone recommend a shop in the Frisco Mckinney area that could do this.  And would anyone have guestimates of how much it would cost.

Thanks for any info and glad to be a part of the forum.

Dean, the owner is sorta hornery but does good work. 27 years of experience and use to be a mech. at Central Yamaha in Plano.

That would be GREAT!!  I really have some learning to do with this bike.  If a wrench session develops then fantastic.  If not, I'll use a recommended shop.  I'm just itchin to ride so bad I want to get er done.

I can help you with that. Before you order parts pry up the dust covers and see what condition the snap ring is in and whether or not it is rusted in place. You will need seals, covers, maybe the snap rings, and 10 or 15 wt. fork oil (absolutely NO ATF). Some brake parts cleaner would be helpful also. If you don't have the tools I can bring mine, just let me know what you might need.

Thanks!  I have craftsman toolset that's pretty basic, 100 pieces.  Not sure what all I'd need.  Any recommendations on where to get the parts from fast?

My schedule is wide open so I could work around whatever time you guys have.

Thanks again for the assistance!

I have a set of seals and dust caps send me your address and I will send them to you you can send me ten bucks for them when you get them, if you want them.

I gotta admit, this is far more help than I anticipated.  My boss is even considering getting a magna now because of the community. :D

That says a lot since he's been riding and swearing by his Vulcan for several years now.  Looking forward to meeting some of you.

I have the parts and I'm thinking of starting this today.  I'm assuming I have to accomplish the following before ever getting to the seals:

Remove brake calipers
Remove front wheel
Remove Fender
Remove fork drain plug

Am I on the right track?  I need to get back on the bike and out of the yukon as soon as possible.  Gas is killing me!!!

I live right off custer and 121 on the mckinney/frisco border if anyone is bored and wants to help guide me through this.  Cell number is 214-566-5487.

I'll be out in the garage scratching my head the rest of the afternoon. :D

You are on the right track. One thing that will help is to break loose but do not remove the drain bolts and the fork caps before you loosen the pinch bolts holding the fork tubes on the tripple tree.

Sorry I missed your post this weekend, if you would like we can work out a day and time to meet so we can get you up and running. I'm right around the corner from you, email me directions to your place when you get a chance.
