chain/sprocket/Raxle position

Rich came out last night on his yellow '95(?) magna hoping to change out the chain. After inspecting the whole situation we came up with some questions. The axle position on the yoke was about an inch past the sticker on the yoke, towards the front of the bike. We figured the current chain was an 18 link but found out the rear sprocket was C43, while my stock sprocket is C40. We figured that was why the axle was so far forward. The chain and sprocket did not seem to have very much wear and we decided not to change the chain.
The question: What kind of damage, if any, can you cause by having the rear axle that far forward of the marker? (The marker puts the axle almost at the center of the slot on the yoke that you can position the axle.)

Should'nt cause any problems. Remember you put a new sticker on with each chain change. So its simply a stretch/wear indicator for the chain.
As long as nothing is binding or rubbing on anything your good.

Huh..... yeah, okay.

Enlighten me on this, I didn't know nor have I ever done this. Are you suppose to buy new stickers each time you replace a chain? If you replace a chain with the proper number of links the wear indicators should be fine, what am I missing?

that is a new one on me too, Greg, All the chains I have changed I have never put a new sticker on, I have just adjusted it based on the original sticker.

I think he is ignoring everyone!!!

IT is a MOOT point as long as the chain/sprockets are not hitting/binding on anything and are in correct alignment, then it doesnt matter where the sticker is located.

Thursday I will have the stealer-ship change out the back tire and chain. I will tell you if the professionals put a new sticker on or not. I believe they have a EK O-Ring for 107.00 but I have not had a chance to price Bates yet.

No new sticker but it did line up with the new chain. It is a little tight so tomorrow I will loosen it a little.

I would say as long as the "lines" ( y'know, the notches with the two-way arrow) are in alignment on either side of the axle, you'll be fine.

..can't really speak about the sticker, though....

I measure from the swingarm pivot to the center of the axle on both sides to ensure it lines up. Had a bike where the left and right sides were off by 2 indicated lines when it was aligned properly.

I do similar with a mic and find 2 points for an accurate measure.
