I met a new Magna owner at our bike nite  last Fri, we got to talking and he ask me about top end on my bike. I told I didn't know, 115 mph is about all my yellow streak will allow. He said that is all his will do and that the Honda Mech said they had a top end limiter on them and that is all that they would do. Drag racer Billy Stone said that from dead stop to top end on Bob's 99 was 130 mph. I sure he wasn't sitting up straight and did not ease up to that speed. I know I've heard others of you say that you top out higher than that ,I guess my question is are there any models that were restricted or is this just a missed informed mech?

The only differences in the 3rd Gens anyway were California models and the rest then there is the Dave Dodge kits and numerous pipes and such. Both the bikes I have had would do about 125 easy then had to have a long stretch to get them any further 130 135 tops thats leaning down to get the slipstream going !!!!

Hey Allen I think his has the Dyno Jet Kit, K&N filter and Vance and Hines exhaust. I don't know if that would help or slow him down.

I had mine up to about 125 by the speedo when I had it.  I'm sure it would come out much slower if verified by GPS, they usually do.  I can't imagine a speed limiter on them, and in 5th the rev limiter won't be a factor because you'll hit the horsepower limit before the RPM limit.

I thought if you had a limiter on the top end speed it would probably work like the cars that have them and just shut off until your speed dropped, but have never had anything that new so I don't really know..

Charles, my '96 chevy truck would cut out at 100 because of the speed limiter in the chip.  My understanding is that an aftermarket preformance chip does away with the speed limiter along with other performance enhancements.  I don't think the 3rd gen Magnas have a "chip" but I could be wrong.

That is why I was asking, I had never heard of any kind of speed limiter on a Magna. I think one of my friends that rides a Yamaha Roadstar said his shuts off when it hits around 100 mph, but it's a pretty late model.
I'm hoping Bill will join Moot, nice guy, he'll fit right in.

Yeah I am pretty sure there is no limter other than REVS but you will not hit that like Curtis said but there is also gearing. Sprocket size also dictates speed but most likely he has stock gearing but you never know that will limit speed or give some depending which way you go!

I hit 125 today as indicated on the speed-o-meter on my ride home, with one tooth less on the front. i also weigh in at about 320 lbs and had the saddlebags full of gear. i may have been going down wind, not sure. there was a crotch rocket riding with me and we would take turns taking the lead. i think he was pretty impressed with a cruizer keeping up with him. :) since i went down a tooth in front, i noticed top end indicated about 115 max, but today was 125 for some reason. with the stock gearing, it would regularly hit 125,i was too scared to go much faster. don't want that ticket, that's for sure.

125 indicated is the max I've done on my '96.  That was with a windshield, a weekends worth of clothes and gear and my big butt on it.  Not quite as fast as I got on my '84 700cc but I've kinda slowed in my "old age".

I am going to guess that with some straining on an ideal day and under ideal conditions that my '95 can do 115 with my 5'10", 200 lbs on board. The fastest ride I have had was last winter. I had to open the throttle to get away from a lunatic in an Econoline who seemed determine to run me down on 316, changing lanes behind me every time I tried to get over to let him pass. When I finally managed to put another sizable vehicle between us and could take my eyes off the road for a split second, the indicator needle was falling down through 95 mph, so I am going to guess I was at a little over 100 mph indicated when I was at full throttle. All the while I was fighting a headwind of about 10 mph with occasional gusts I'd guess around 20. It was the first time I had had any occasion to wish for a faster bike.

Now you guys got me wondering what my magna can do.....  I've got the speedometer to around the 110 mark and was still pulling.  I think once I get a new front tire (right now I believe I have the original (97) and 31,000+ miles) I'll strap on my GPS and see what I can do.

TLRam1

Herman,

I can assure you that you do not have the original front tire from 97 with 31k on them.

At 130 he is probably in the low low 120's, a GPS will give you a good reading though. The last time I checked mine with a GPS at 115 was actual 107-108. I've had mine barely at 125 indicated, shields will kill your top end as will anything that causes wing drag. Takes lots of HP to over come wing drag and the faster you go the more small issues become larger obsticales.
