Ok... First off "HELLO!!" everyone, as I am new to the board....   :D ....  I am the proud owner for my FIRST magna, a 1982 that I picked up off local CL for a mere 900.00.... In running condition....  however; I rode it home and I am now in the process of completely tearing it down to the frame for paint and restoration.....

My questions are:

   1.  Anyone know of a great way to restore and reseal the upper fuel tank, as the gas was sitting in there for extremely long time and is rusting it away?

   2.  Anyone know how in the heck to remove the bottom / reserve tank?  or is the rear tire removal necessary?

   3.  The guy it bought it from said he had to fill the shaft oil, and he overfilled it causing it to purge out of the vent from the top.  What is the proper way of filling it and how much/what kind of fluid is used.

Anyways, thanks for having me on the board, and you can bet I will be an active member and take pics as the restoration unfolds.

welcome aboard nice to have you here the bike looks good. on the tank take it off flush it out good and they sell a tank sealer that you can pour in it to stop the rust and to seal it you can probable get it at an auto parts store or I know they sell it at J.C.Whitneys on line.  I order to get the reserve tank off I am fairly sure you have to pull the rear wheel. on the shaft drive remove the lower plug and drain it then remove the plug that is about 1/4 the way up and fill it with 80 or 90 weight gear oil until it starts to run out of the fill hole.

Welcome to the club....  I think the only way to get the reserve tank out is thru the rear after you take the fender and stuff out of there!!!! as far as the Main tamk Creme works but to do the job right and I mean no rust fixed is to have the bottom cut out and cleaned and welded back on ...

How bad is the tank rust? Leaks, pinholes? I have done several and personally do not like to use a liner unless absolutely necessary than use POR-15. Kreem I have never used due to the ones who restore having less than stellar success with this product. If you do use a liner you must follow the directions for a clean DRY surface. To dry you can use a hair dryer for a day so all the crevices are dry.

I use Evaporust from Oreilly's, I think this is the same as Phosphoric Acid or Phosphoric from Kleen Strip at Home Depot those products will be okay to use also but I have no personal experience from with them. Evap O will clean the rust will not hurt the paint if it gets on it (I wouldn't try soaking a painted item in it though) for a nice clean surface. Once you rinse treat with oil quickly to prevent surface rust. I rinse with water than add a bottle of alcohol to dissipate the water, once gas is added I shake the tank and that's it. Afterwards I put a inline filter on and run with it.

Important, before the above I remove the petcock, take it to the high pressure car wash and blow all rust debris out but mine have been pretty rusted as in shake around rusted.

My photo link does not work....the website has a hosting site for photos if you do not have one or prefer to host somewhere else. You can add your own folder if you like and put all your photos there. On the front page of the Forum look at the bottom for MOOT BUSINESS (you must be signed in as this is a "Member Only" area). Inside within the top 3 post you will see a sticky post How to Post Photos or something to that affect.

Where are you located? In your signature line it's good to add where you reside, someone might be close by to help and I'm just curious.  :-P 8-)

Inside of tank can be cleaned with bunch of bb's and a clothes dryer..  Trapper describes this in a post on the forum.
removing all parts one can from the tank, taping up the openings and putting into a clothes dryer.  Packed with blankets, pillows, etc to cushion tank so it would doesnt bounce around.  The bb's will bounce around inside blasting the inside of the tank will clean the rust out.

CAUTION!!!!  MAKE SURE THE TANK HAS BEEN WELL VENTILATED AND COMPLETELY DRY before putting into the dryer!

This sounds like a good idea.... and I will give that a go around tomorrow (sunday) just to see how it works!!  I have been working ALL DAY at getting the residual fuel out of the tank, and Hopefully by tomorrow it will be evaporated enough

I am located in AUSTIN TEXAS!!  well...actually Pflugerville...LOL!!

I will use your idea to evap any extra moisture with the alcohol ...should that be denatured alcohol?

The tank is rusted, but no pin holes of any kind and it is only on the inside of the tank....  the carb bowls where full of gunk and I have them soaking tonight....  I am going to strip everything down to bare bones except wiring and engine, so that I can start the painting process...  I am excited,as it has been years since I have done a "project" bike and really did my research so that I will be proud of the outcome....  I didn't want to buy someone else's garage queen....

I will try the pics folder tomorrow.... really doing it for my benefit, but enjoy sharing also

Well, that is good.  We need some more MOOTsters in this area.  Ken (MagnaDaddy) is in Hutto, and I am a few miles from The Salt Lick, near the intersection of TX45 and FM1826.

I have a few tools that may be of use.  -- Like a chain break, a chain riveter, a "mercury stick" for synchronizing carbs, other miscellaneous stuff.

I think Ken is planning to come down sometime between Christmas and New Year's to sync some carbs.  Perhaps you could come at the same time, and we could get acquainted a bit better.

I know you can't be ready to tune up your new baby by that time, (or at least, I sure couldn't!!) but you are welcome anytime.
