Do you guys replace the valve cover gaskets when you adjust the valves?
About how long does this project take on a 1st gen Magna v45?

I think I spent about an hour all together just adjusting the valves, but I already had the engine out to replace the head and I double checked the clearances all twice.
Front head probably has about 1 hour of time to pull the radiator out of the way and put it back.
Back head is probably more like 1.5/2hrs I'm guessing with the engine in the frame to get things out of the way and then back together.

Yeah, the back head is my concern.  It is so tight back there, and it is the one making noise.  The front should be pretty quick and easy.  I have pulled the radiator a couple of times so I have it down.  Can do that in about 10 min.

What about the gaskets?  Do I need to order some or is there a good chance I can reuse them?  Bike has just over 16K miles on it.

It,s hard to say most of the time I would say you would not have to replace but being 25 years old you might have to. I would say pull the covers and check your valves if the gaskets are hard time to change them. They could be reinstalled but would order some and install them!!

Yeah, I think better safe than sorry on this one.  I will go ahead and order the gaskets.  I am going to replace the tensioner at the same time.  Anyone up for a Houston wrench session in a few weeks??  I can host.

MagnaDaddy

The cover gaskets on my '86 were "petrified" so I'd guess yours are in need of replacement as well.   You don't have to take the chain loose but if the guides worn then that would be the time to change it...

I have quite a bit of noise at idle from the rear head.  It goes away as the rpm go up some.  I figure it is most likely the tensioner, but know I should do the valves also.

I get off March 11th so the 14th and 15th would do me fine I could be there for sure!!!!
