Dan,
I have to agree that your way off base on the cleaning oiling interval on the K&N filters.  Why would anyone buy a filter that required that much maintenance??
Also, IMO, the best thing you can do is keep your oil and oil filter changed.

I do agree that unless you are going to rejet your carbs putting a K&N on is a bad idea.

where do you get your information about cleaning the k&n air filter every 1k miles? I have them in my bike and in two of my cars and NEVER check them that much, and one car has over 150k on it. you're not even supposed to check your paper filter elelments that much?!?  Have you even looked at the k&n filter after 1k miles, 2 k, 4k? yep, oil is still there, no need for re oiling. I tap it clean when I check them, but you most definately do not need to wash and re-oil every 1k miles. as a matter of fact, i just re piled the one in my old civic. it was slightly dirty and the red color was getting faded. know how many miles it had on the filter? oh about 30K!

lol.  that 1k was supposed to be 10k.  It is what the local mechanics recommend.

I'm glad you put so much effort into keeping it clean...most people i know with the K&N, drop it in, and forget it.  Many too lazy to reoil it.

Not looking for a debate....best to post your opinions and all are welcome but I would rather not see someone taking a shot at another on the board. No I'm not an Uncle Tom  (or Greg) :-P and never seen you say stuff like that Dan so it may be just a quick reaction as you were reading.  :-? but no wars..

Nope, and that's why I love this board...and the group of guys.

On other boards like a sportbiker forum I know of, they'll be whole threads based on personal information being thrown left and right, saying real mean things to each other, and no mods ever pull the plug.  This board is way more mature than a bunch of sportbiker forums I used to participate on.

I don't believe in the K&N hype.  The advertisements sound GREAT, but I'm not going to just put in a filter for 50k, and forget about it.  I'll pay the extra change to use OEM filters every 2 years, and monitor it for myself.  There's been extensive studies on this, and there's no proof that K&N claims are any more than a placebo felt by the rider/driver.

Now, i did say, earlier in this thread, maybe if I changed everything to K&N (all filters, rejetted, big bore, etc...), maybe then I'd believe in the logic behind it because it better completes the "system".

Biting remarks notwithstanding, I'm with you Dan on the K&N.  It is very pleasing to me to throw ALL of the dirt away and start fresh with an OEM paper filter.  I've cleaned my daughter's K&N on the Civic she used to have exactly ONCE.  Never again!

Terry:  Thanks for your efforts to preserve the culture that we've established on this wonderful board!  Very tactful, you are! (said in my best Yoda voice)

It will run slightly lean.  You will start to hear some decel popping.
