I,m thinking of changing the jets on my 1996 Magna as i too have the stumble at 5000rpm..but what i cant
understand is why Honda would manufacture and distribute a bike with that problem.. :???:(or have i missed something).I dont like running the bike to far/often because of the lean mixture..Anyone shed some light on this for me please..thanks..punchy

They way I understand it, in the US.

EPA - Environmental Protection Agency, smog, pollution, gas mileage, etc.

In the UK, I don't know.

No problem running it at what ever distances you want in stock form.

you could have hit the nail on the head there Terry, my bike is an American import,so that would explain the stuttering (EPA)..do you think the mixture could be increased (slightly richer) without doing any harm..Dave

You bet Dave, without a problem.

What pipes and air filter do you have & do you know what jets are in it now?

Depending how far you wanted to go....

If stock pipes, you can put in 105 Main Jets, 1 extra shim (total of 2) and turn the pilots screws out 2 3/4 turns. If you want to minimize, add 1 extra shims (total of 2 per needle) and turn fuel screws out 2 3/4 turns.

Hi Terry, pipes are stock, air filter is a K&n..carbs and jets have been off and cleaned by the local mechanic..
Im presuming the jets are stock, (never asked mechanic)can the mix be altered without changing jets..made richer..Dave

Yes shim the needles with one shim making 2 total that will richen up your midrange where your popping seems to be from reading your posts!!

yes, and turn your fuel screws out, you will be fine without changing jets. The fuel screws are hard to reach with the carbs on the bike, that is why I mentioned the jets if you go ahead and pull the carbs, might as well do it all.

Hi again, thanks for the replys. Im gonna have a word with the mechanic who helps me to keep
my bikes on the road and get him to richen things up.. I can do the basics but messin with the carbs i
usually balls things up.. but things are gonna have to wait as ive just started my xjr up and the collector
box has blown a bloody hole in it..(more expense).Once ive had the carbs sorted ill post back, thanks again
for the info lads,Dave.

Working on the carbs will be all labor, parts if you do the jets will not be too much. Post up when you get it done.

hi again, just a last thought on the subject,,, when riding the bike and  it hits the stumble at 5000 rpm
i then  power through it, am i doing any harm to the engine, ta,Dave.

The K&N filter is compounding the lean condition you are experiencing.  You can go with a stock air filter if you wish, this will help quite a bit, but not completely cure the symptoms.

You will benefit from a shim and pilot jet adjustment either way.

I've got a stock filter I bought after I put in the K&N because of the bad flat spot.  I used it for about 100 miles before Chad helped me rejet the carbs and I was able to put the K&N back in.  It's practically brand new.
