Len...
Remind us what kind of tire you have..
Also - According to the picture, you have 12K and the tits have not worn down yet..
Did you do 12K on a jackstand???

(CORRECTION.....) my milage estimate is off. I have replaced the rear tire 3 times since I owned the magna.
Its a Kuhmo 165/80R 15 87T
Its one of the tires "not" recommended on the darkside forum due to it rupturing while trying to seat on the rim.
I did not know this when I got it. Just got lucky I guess
No I have put the miles on it riding on the streets. I'm not a heavy curve hugger so the edges don't wear as much.
My milage is an estimate but close.
When Curtis sold me the bike he had 12500 miles on it and had replaced the tire around 9-10K
He put a dunlop k555 on rear. and a metzler on the front
I rode the bike for about 4K more on the rear and replaced it with another K555. (now had 16.5K)
I replaced the front tire at about 19-20K with a dunlop k555
I rode it for about 7K on the rear. (now had 23.5K)
Replaced the rear with another K555. (now had 29.5K)
Replaced it with my Kumho. Now have 35.3K on it. (So i have 6K on the tire)
Soon to need a new front again

Any Idea what PSI it took to seat your tire..
I know for the one I had was 115 PSI
and it was the same for Lawrence (I think) when recently the same tire was installed.

It took 120PSI by the gauge on my compressor.

OK, I bit the bullet on the 2nd '96, and bought a "Nanking" car tire that looks for all the world like the pics that Hoot posted.

Would it by any chance look like this one?

I'm about to come over to the dark side myself....

That is the tire I have..
Negatives are:
Sidewalls are a little softer than I would prefer (1 ply)
because of the straight ribs, it can catch on rain grooves and give you a little wiggle, most of the time not, but if they are just the right width/depth, it can happen.

Pluses -
Quiet
Cheap
sticky rubber

I have the same tire.  Bought it from HighPerformanceTires.com.  Cost $36 + $17.28 shipping = $53.28 delivered to my door.

Highly recommend tire irons, designed for dismounting/mounting tires from rims.  Bought mine from Harbor Freight Tools.  The two of 'em cost ~$7.50 total.

Good luck.

I like the fact that the side wall is softer. it makes leaning the bike easier, to me. Seams like more of the tire is in contact with the road.
Im especially a fan of the Cheap!, sticky and quiet are definatly pluses as well.
I was tired of dropping $150 every year for a new rear tire!

Do you feel the softer sidewalls could present a problem when cornering? I like the pluses :). Thanks Iragan for the tip on the tire irons.

No - not a cornering issue, it just allows the rear to swing a little father out when cornering.. It may also allow more rubber to stay on the road, not sure.. I think a stiffer sidewall tire wouldn't feel as mushy in the corners, but NO there is no problem with cornering.. I have drug my pegs on several occasions and have accelerated hard when taking off while turning (like making a left our of a gas station) and I have NEVER had the tire slip at all at any time. I can NOT say the same for M/C tires... I've had every M/T slip under those conditions, especially an older tire (harder rubber) and Bevel on the tread from the tire flattening out from straight riding.. (On my wife's 03 Sabre as well)
My C/T is performing the same today as the day it was new.. The rubber hasn't seemed to harden at all and the tread has worn evenly..

That's just what I wanted to hear, I'm a convert. Thanks alot for the reply and the info.

I'm just waiting for my tire to go bald.... so I can darkside too..

I don't understand it.  I've had the tires on my bike now for 4 years...they're cracked...and I've gone 23,000 miles on them.

I probably have about 60% tread left, and I still have some tits.

I guess I don't ride as hard as you guys do.

Both my tires are stock dunlop M/C tires too.

A couple of things Dan...
First.. It's "got Jugs" NOW an update on your present chest status...

Second.. Your tires are probably hard as a rock.. M/C tires over time become hard and less sticky..
I know things are tight with you right now, but when you get a couple of nickels to rub together, you may want to think about going ahead and changing out your tires.. You won't believe the difference.. I recommend Metzlers over Duncraps... But that's just me..
The tire cracking also bothers me (and should probably bother you as well)...

Third - great signature picture.. Where is that??
