Side Gear Gasket

I've developed a leak at the gasket to the Side Gear where it mounts to the transmission section of the motor on my '86' V65.  I was curious if anyone has ever changed one of these before?  It looks like I may be able to leave the water pump and drive shaft all connected and just pull loose the side gear mounting bolts and slide in a new gasket, but I know things never really work that easy lol.

this sounds exactly where I had a leak on my old Magna although It was a v45 so it may differ. But in my experience the trick is getting the aluminum engine block to seal when you replace the gasket.  Make sure the surfaces are very clean and smooth otherwise it will continue to leak, and then make sure you re tighten the bolts in a cross hatch style pattern, and be careful not to over tighten.  Have fun!

I had a similar issue with the cover over the stator. I'd bought a new gasket, but somehow got it folder over on one corner when putting it back on and ruined it. I was able to use to old gasket. That was a couple of years ago and I haven't had a problem.
I'd rather be outside than in.

Well, I just had a stroke of luck with this issue.  I was looking at exactly how I was going to tackle it when I realized there was oil up higher than the side gear, and when I really got to looking I luckily found out that the big hose that comes from the back of the case of the motor up into the tan colored vacuum box under the seat had come loose from the box.  So apparently that was just letting a bunch of blow by gather up and drip down.  I'm glad I found it though because it was all draining down the exhaust shroud for the #1 and #4 exhaust pipes.  I appreciate the info you guys gave, but it looks like I won't be needing to use it just yet lol!
