Garmin V question for Jeff or Curtis

Well,  the Garmin V I picked up from eBay saga has taken another turn today.  I bought a serial cable for it that the seller did not include ($10, no biggie).  Well, I go to install the MapSource and apparantly there is another CD (set-up CD of some kind) that he also did not include.  The MapSource I have (v5) includes two discs.  I put the first one in and try to run "setup" and I get an error saying that I have to run the setup CD first so I'm assuming it's some kind of Garmin setup CD which then allows the MapSource program to interface and run.  Since I did not hear from the seller about the cable I highly doubt he will answer an inquiry about the CD.

Am I correct or way off base?  If I'm right do either of you have a setup CD I can get a copy of or am I S.O.L.?

Run the other disc you have.  I ran into the same thing.

edit: wait, I do have three discs.  Two are City Select v6 and one is City Select v3 setup.  I think I had to run the v3 one first, but shoot..........I can't remember.  I did run into a problem where the disc I though I should load was not the right one and I had to use the other one.

Tried that already bro.  Disc 2 is just a data disc, probably more map info.  All I have is MapSource v5 which comes with Disc 1 and Disc 2 (not to be confused with Thing 1 and Thing 2  8)  ) and only Disc 1 has a "setup.exe" file.  However, when I try to run it it just tells me I need to run a setup disc first to use the software.

Ok, I'll try to burn a copy of my setup disc tomorrow and get it in the mail.  If I remember correctly you run that one first and then the other ones.  You do have your unlock code don't you?  You're for sure out of luck without that.

I may still have your home addy, but e-mail it to me just in case.

There are 3 discs and you will need to run the setup disk before running the 2 discs that you have. Jimmy, did your discs come with an unlock code on them? This may present a problem i dunno.

I think I'm seeing why the seller won't answer any of my e-mails now.

I dont know if this will work; but you might contact garmins customer service
let em know your're a 2nd or 3rd party owner.
Maybe if you give em the serial number on the unit they might have record of the unlock code.
I cant believe this is the first time this has ever happened.
If I owned one I bet I'd lose the code after a while....

Jimmy, did you get things worked out for your GPS?

Not yet Jeff.  The seller has ignored every e-mail I have sent him so I highly suspect he knew beforehand the deal.  I checked his recent eBay purchases and he bought a Magellan GPS right before he put the one I got up for auction.  My guess is that he bought this Garmin V, ran into the same problem I have and then decided to sell it.

I have tried contacting Garmin customer support but they have a terrible problem with keeping people on hold.  Their customer service line is open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Central time.  I have called them twice right at 8:00 am and gave up after staying on hold for around 30-35 minutes.  I'll keep trying but it's very frustrating.

Hopefully you can still leave negative feedback on that lousy seller.

I left positive feedback after I got the unit and before I knew of the situation.  Even if I was able to still leave a negative I seriously doubt he would care.

This is exactly why I do not buy from anyone I can't look into the eyes at the time of purchase.  That way they are likely to think " Damn, I don't want this crazy SOB to come after me".

When you use Curtis' setup disc you may be able to retreive the unlock code during the setup. You might could use his code if he sent it to you if the program doesn't detect that it is installed on another computer. I don't think you will have any trouble with that, IIRC, since Deb and I both had the program running on seperate computers with the same unlock code.

That's true, Jeff. The Garmin V has been around awhile, so it probably doesn't have Internet activation like new software. Any serial number for that software may work. Plus I don't think Garmin would really care. After all, what good is their software without one of their GPS units? And Jimmy can prove he owns it.

I don't know Jeff.  I told Curtis not to worry about sending me the disc until I talked to Garmin but so far I've been unable to talk to a human at Garmin Customer Support so I'm at a standstill.

What do think Curtis?  Is it worth a shot?
