On my Yellow Magna, I had drilled two 3/8" holes in each exhaust.. It freed up the flow, and raised the sound level just a little..

My Red Magna does not run as well as the yellow one, so I decided it was time to free it up as well.

The plan was to remove the end plate, cut the resonator off, and remount the plate (I don't like the look of the exhaust without the plate)...

So, I drilled out all the rivets of the 1st exhaust, and it seems you have to mangle the plate some to get it to come out, so I abandoned this idea...

To the old adage, if some is good, a lot has to be better! Right...

So, I drilled three 1/2" holes in each exhaust...
I'm not overly happy with the results, but it's too late now..
I think the flow is a little too much for my present jetting, but probably livable, but the exhaust is quite a bit louder (not what I was shooting for)...
I guess I'll have to live with it... If I had to do it again, I would have probably started with one or two holes and see how it was, but NOOOoooo,

So, If you are thinking about this approach, I suggest the gradual approach instead of the go for it approach...

If you like the sound of the plates being removed, but want to keep the plate look, then three 1/2" holes is probably plenty...

All you need are 4 more unmolested donor end plates and you can start over or as on one of my Magnas has, get a machine shop to cut you new end plates, you don't need the lip turned out.

Thanx Terry - I'll keep that in mind, and see how it goes..

I drilled out the rivets with a smaller diameter bit so I could tap the holes for an Allen head cap screw (24 in total. I've removed and re-installed the end plates a couple of times now and all seems to work fine. I drilled about 15 holes (1/4" dia) in each baffle and removed the insulation. the sound is a bit louder but not overly so (subjective). In any event, the baffle tubes can be recovered with sheet metal if necessary. I didn't have to touch the carbs and the bike works great (2000 Magna with about 50,000 miles).
