My 1985 suddenly lost power  one day on my way to work. Checked it out and found that the chain for the front cylinders had broken. The rear cylinder chain was still intact and the engine still ran. How do I deal with putting a new chain in.

I can't answer your question, but I have an additional thought..
IF the cam chain broke, then I would be concerned with the valves in the front bank of cylinders..
The pistons would continue to move up and down, but the valves would be stationary in whatever position they stopped in..
If any of them were open, then the piston would have smacked the valve(s)..
Not to make you worry more, but something to consider...

Hoot has a point.  If, after replacing the valve timing chain to the front cylinders, a compression check should tell you if you have a problem with a bent valve stem.

Thanks for the word.I have considered the possibility of bent valves. I will probably have to replace some valves also. My big problem is How to replace this chain. Any solid suggestions are welcome.

Well never have done one but if the chain is visible and you have a chaintool you can press a new link you could slip the new chain on the old feed it around and then press a new link on the new chain and button it up that is if like has been said you did not bend any valves
