Afraid not.  Bad attack of my chronic Loathsome Condition; been weak as a newborn kitten and probably couldn't lift one.  It's very frustrating, not to mention painful.

But thanks for the thought.

What's really got me sweating buckshot is the thought:  what if I pull this thing apart and there's nothing wrong with the clutch?  Then where do I go?

I'm just barely in the opening stages of disassembly - haven't even gotten the side cover off yet - and normally that wouldn't be such a big deal.  I mean, I've done it before, when I had to rebuild the starter clutch, and as I recall it wasn't all that hard a job.  (Though it wasn't nearly this hot - I can only wrench for short periods, most days, without my tools getting too hot to pick up, let alone use.  But the weather seems to be cooling off at last.)

But all the time I'm haunted by this vision of a clutch in perfect or near-perfect condition.  Which will leave me up the well-known unsanitary tributary...all that work for nothing, and I won't even be able to reassemble it until I find out what the hell IS wrong.  (Because if it's not the clutch, then it could very well be something else that would still require a teardown.)

I don't even really know what to look for; I've seen cooked clutches but not on a Honda, so I might or might not recognize the symptoms.  (Anybody care to give me a description?  Better yet, anybody know where I can find a photo?  The only one I've seen, while of excellent quality, doesn't make it all that clear what I should be looking for.  Blackened and flaking pads, of course, but that's in an extreme case...I've heard it said that you should try and dent a clutch pad with a thumbnail and see if it's gone hard and brittle; do you think that would work?)

Is it possible for the springs to be sacked without leaving any signs of damage to the clutch plates?  I intend to replace the whole package (Barnett, I think) in any case, so I guess that's a moot point....

Q.  What do you call a cross between a cow and an owl?
A.  A cowl.
Q.  What is the sound made by a cowl?
A.  Moot, moot.
Q.  Thank you, Mr. Joyce.  You may sit down.

(Damn it, I DID take my medication, didn't I?)

It MAY be for you, but it's not all that much work.
If you have a tarp laying around, try to cover your work area so you're not out in the baking sun heating your tools up..

I think the only way you can really know if the clutch pads are bad is to measure them.. But I doubt you will find any listed measurement for how thin a pad should be before you replace it..

I would imagine that you will find quite a bit of bluing on the metal plates based on your description of events. This will be a sign that the pads were slipping and building up heat..

You stated that you already found what happened.. The clutch adjustment at the handle bar loosened and went out of adjustment..
This would wear on the pads...
Weather is getting cooler.. yea!!!

From your description the clutch is about the only thing that it can be don't try to over think it replace the clutch and expect good results. Good luck.

Clutch lever should have 10-20 mm free play. In other words no tension fully extended and for up to 20 mm travel.

That could be a problem, the clutch not releasing all the way somewhere along the system.
