3rd generation grip change

Got some new grips.  Any tips on removing the old ones.  Is it possible to salvage them in case some might need them later?

When I did mine, the stock grips were glued on (you will have to glue on the new grips too), so I had to cut them off.  Just cut through the rubber on the stock grips and they will peel off pretty easy.

Depending on the new grips you got, when I put on my new grips I had to use epoxy to get them not to slip.  Regular grip glue wasn't strong enough...then again maybe I didn't wait long enough for the grip glue to dry...

The throttle grip is stuck on over a plastic sleeve that rotates on the handlebars and the sleeve contains the eyes for the throttle cables to hook up. I think you have to cut that one off carefully.

You can probably get the left grip off in one piece though. (Mine keeps sliding down on it's own). You can pop up the little chrome cap on the end of the rubber grip. It does not screw off but rather snaps into some notches in the rubber. So instead of twisting it, just pull on it and walk it back and forth. Once the cap is off you maybe can get a little oil or something similar under the rubber grip and work it off.

Compressed air was the winner.  Removed grips undamaged but later found out the sent me wrong grips.  They were for a Harley.  Oh well, corrected order is on its way.  Glad I have 2 Magna's!

WHEN I DID MINE THE PLASTIC DEAL ON THE ACCELERATOR WAS THE HARD PART.  I PULLED THE COVER ON THE LEFT SIDE AND TOOK ALL OF THE TENSION OFF OF THE ACCELERATOR CABLE.  YOU MIGHT NEED TO REMOVE THE SEAT AND RAISE THE REAR PART OF THE GAS TANK UP TO ACCESS THE 3 BOLTS THAT HOLD THE ACCELERATOR ON.  IT TOOK SOME TIME BUT IT MADE IT EASIER.  ALSO, MAKE SURE YOU USE PLENTY OF SUPER GLUE ON THE LEFT HAND GRIP.  IT WILL SLIDE OFF PRETTY EASY.

Yes, thats exactly what we had to do when I did receive correct grips.  Got it done some time ago and its back in service...

. . . and be quick about it.  I put new grips on mine and the glue sets up in less than 5 seconds on the throttle side.  Apparently the plastic housing likes to speed up the curing process.  The other side, with just the metal bar exposed took quite a bit longer.  Seems like it took several hours before it stopped sliding.
