Hello all! I recently bought a 96 750 magna. Haven't been on a motorcycle since I was 6 or 7 years old.

The previous owner didn't have any manuals, mainly trying to figure out how to shut off and turn on the fuel.

Sorry for posting this in the wrong section of the site if I did.

Welcome!!!
I am an outlier, I live in Florida..
As to your fuel question..
There is a Petcock on the left side of the fuel tank near the rear..
When the tab points towards the rear it is in normal mode
When it points towards the front it is in reserve
When it points straight down, the fuel is shut off..

HOWEVER, there is a vacuum fuel shut off on the bike as well.
So, if the bike is not running, the fuel is automatically shut off to the carbs..

This Shut off has a diaphragm that can fail and not allow fuel to pass or be restricted..

I believe IF you utilize the "search" function, and search for a shop manual, you can find a link for a download.

There are not many of us left that check this site often, but there are a few, and all of them are helpful..

But much has been documented and can be searched..

Again, Welcome and keep the questions coming..

I am mainly trying to get the bike into a rideable condition currently, small things here and there. Cleaning up the poor rewiring for the lights and tuning the carbs to remove the deceleration popping is the major things.

Eventually I plan on bringing it to the local votech to get it repainted, maybe a pearl white. I also plan on fabricating a new rear fender, the previous owner made one out of plastic. The fender by itself looks okay, just doesn't match the bike.

39,101 miles now, it was spray painted blue by the previous owner. It honestly is one of the better spray paint jobs I've seen. I have made plans to have it repainted by the local votech (the instructor does a good job training them). Might get it in a pearl white.

If you can post up some before photos so we can see what you are working with. Your carbs just may be a bit dirty depending on the severity you are encountering.

This subject of the fuel shut off valve. I have searched and searched and never found that it is strictly for when you forget to shut off the fuel? I had a blown one and didn't appreciate the price of even a new one? I pulled it, put an inline filter on the 3/8" fuel tube, and most of the tome I remember to shut off the fuel until I ride the next day or week. I put a plug on the vacuum at the number 4 carb. I still had to clean the carbs and did a pretty good job I think? No bad bellows. Needles and jets all cleaned to the see through holes, soaked a bit in Seafoam, pretty much standard agreements from here. When I purchased the back there was no "lag" in the take off. No having to pump the gas and work it up to where I could work it with the clutch, in ANT gear. Response was always "immediate", what ever it had and you wanted it, it would give it to you. I can not safely ride the bike at my age, when there's a chance I NEED that punch I know the V4 has. (It's a 98 Black with Orange. C2) Yes, I went thru a divorce. I moved to an apartment. It sat under a cover for that winter. 2015-2016 until I moved up here to Dallas with a friend. I towed it up with other stuff in a van, so I had not started it until here. It was NEVER the same. That's when we checked all of the fuel process and removed the fuel valve, totally cleaned the carbs and replaced them all blah blah. I'm so sorry. I can't see how that valve would make any difference, but if anyone can blow me away I would actually be grateful. Ha! Just tell me it has no influence on the fuel supply? Now let me be clear, the LOW end, the beginning of the throttle has no UMPH. I have to pump it up to a high RPM and even then work the clutch with it. This isn't the bike I bought. I researched two things, before I go buying new jets and needles etc, an old friend of Dave Dodge. I've owned every V4 ever produced. (Wish I had them back! Ha!) One thing. 1. I did not set the pilot jet nor any jet when I did the rebuild. I read that it is to be screwed in the settle softly and backed off ???????, I haven't found that yet in the manual. 2. I have not done a running motor synch yet. I am doing an off bike synch with a drill bit. Just looking at the flaps, they really look good? But I will do a true synch. 3. The "Idle screw" has been messed with quit a bit by different people checking it out. Can the idle screw under the #1 carb affect the low end like this?

Thank you for listening and I hope someone sees this in the next 24 hrs. I have some help with me now. Anyone from anywhere is just great by me. :-)

Wow Kirk, that is a lot of info..

The Vacuum shut off is just that.. There is a diaphragm in side that the vacuum pulls open, so when the bike is not running, no vacuum, no fuel can pass.. It is a safety feature, that is all.. IF it is working properly (and they usually work or don't), it should have no effect on running.. IF somehow it was only partially working it would effect high revs more than low revs (not passing enough fuel)..
BTW, there is a rebuild kit you can buy and not have to buy the whole unit.

The idle adjust screw (singular) that dangles down on the left side of the bike just pushes on the throttle plate and opens the carbs a little as adjusted, so you can play with that all you want, it doesn't effect the mixture at all..

My understanding is there are three jets (MY UNDERSTANDING) but you can only get to 2 of them.. You have the low speed and high speed jets.. The Pilot jet is fixed and can not be accessed.

Every time I've seen a bike reported that would not run on the low end and run a little better on the high end (if you could get the revs high enough to get it there), it's been carbs and usually jets.. These have really small idle jets and they clog very easily.. I've heard of bikes that have sat for as little as 6 weeks that had the carbs clog up.. It has been worse since the issuance of Ethanol in our fuel supply..

I run SeaFoam in every second or 3rd tank, and always if I think the bike is going to sit more than 2 weeks.

I don't know if any of that helps, but good luck, you'll get her back in running condition I'm sure...

I'm back with a question. My Magna (750) has straight pipes with the stock filter. I also have a K&N filter that I got from the previous owner.

I want to get it running correctly, its currently running lean. Would the Dave dodge kit be sufficient with the 105 jets with this setup or should I get bigger than that?

That is the last major thing that I need to take care of on my bike. Everything else (fork seals, counter shaft seal, clutch cable, wiring, and the rear tire with the plug in the side wall...) has been replace and repaired.

I'll upload pictures as requested by TLRam1 here soon.

What indicates you are running lean?

CK - I don't think you will know until you try it..
I had a yellow 94 that had 42/105 set up with a K&N.
I bought a Red 94, so I swapped air cleaners and the Yellow bike came alive with the stock filter.. It felt like it gained 10 HP..
I have the Red bike now set up the same way (stock filter) and it does not run as well as the yellow bike did..
I wouldn't be afraid of going 108, but even though bikes are identical, sometimes they run a little different..
You won't know until you you get it running and try it out..
