3rd Gen intermittent starter problem.

Yesterday and today when the engine was cold mid 30s, the starter would intermittently not engage it would just spin.  After the engine was warm, it did not appear to have the problem.
Is the starter going out or is there an adjustment I need to do.  I just added driving light. I think I tightened the battery cables enough.

It sounds to me the starter clutch gear check balls are not engaging.  Could be oil is too thick during the cold weather not allowing the check balls to sling out and lock the gear.  Try changing your oil to see if that frees the check balls up. Also make sure you are using the correct oil viscosity.  Worst case scenario, you may have to go into the side cover and replace the starter clutch gear.

Could the starter just need a good cleaning and re-lube to free things up?

I have recently changed the oil.  I do believe I went with a little warmer grade oil but I would not have gone with a grade that was not rated for the 30s. I guess for now I will see if it is temperature related or a real problem.

I have had that happen a few times but it was not cold related. I would put it in gear and push it a few inches and pop the clutch to rotate the engine a bit and then it would start up okay.
