newbie has ticks

Hi everyone,

My name is Matt, I have owned my 95 VF750cd for about 2 weeks now and love it to death.  I also just joined MOOT as #551.

I bought the bike and drove it home and to work once or twice it had about 300 miles on it from when i bought it (6800 miles on it then).  Bike ran without a hitch.  However this past weekend when i did the oil (mobile 1 syn 10/40, it was their motorcycle oil) I rode the bike later that evening and after it go really hot i got a ticking noise.  at first i thought it might be a sticky valve.  but when i got off of it and tried to isolate the noise it seems to be coming from down by the crank....  I am scared..  anyways got the bike home, it cooled down and now when i fire it up, no tick untill it gets pretty darn hot, and even then it sometimes goes away....

I am new to the V-4 scene but not new to bikes.  I live in an apartment in Arlington so major work and repairs are tough to do.   Any insight or advice would be appreciated.

The 3 rd Gen sometimes will have a little raddle noise in the engine but I would not describe my noise as a ticking noise.  So I don't know if it is the same.  Does the noise sound ominous or like something is slightly shacking in the engine.

The Magna will make a noise down low when they get good and warm, mine did it and my son now has it with over 30K and still running just as strong as it ever did.
I have wanted to try dry a different weight oil in the hot months to see if it helps, but always seem to forget too.

Like it has been said this is a Magna trait heheh both of mine do it I use Royal Purple in both 10w40 one thing you might try when you get off the bike after running it have someone pull the clutch in and then listen it may go away since the clutch will make some noise when warmed up!!

thanks for the heads up.   I will monitor the problem.  One last point of concern.  I dont have my clymers in yet or the owners manual that came with the bike.  how much oil do you typically put in the bike when you guys do your changes.  

I have just been eyeballing it as best i can with the dipstick pulled out and the bike level.

I generally eyeball it myself since I have my oil in gallon jugs but the manual states 3.3Q with filter change....

My 01 ticks also.  From what I've read, what you need to listen for is a more pronounced and irregular noise, that could end up being the cam chain tensioner(s).

For an oil change with filter,,, 3.3 qts.

I've got a 97 and have the tick.  I've just learned to live with the noise.  It's been running strong, so I don't worry about it.  I've tried to "fix" it, but nothing has worked.

As far as oil...The manual says 3.3, but I've found it likes more oil to be in the "safe" zone on the dip stick.  I put in closer to 3.75 quarts and have been running strong.

Last time I changed my oil I put in a bit more then 3.3 (probably 3.5) and have been somewhat curious if I should drain a bit or not.  The dipstick shows just a tad too full then it should be.

Guess I'm fine.

I fill from a gallon container also but I use the M1 filter which is a little bigger then the stock filter.

A good day can be had around Weatherford, Granbury and Glen Rose.  There are some really good twisty roads around the Dinosaur park and not too far for a day ride from Arlington.  Grab a map and plan your route, you can't go wrong in that area if you stick to the back roads.  Lots of good places to eat in any of those three towns.
