If Harley made a 750 . . .

Then I am the first owner.

To make a long story short, I walked past my Magna that hadn't been running in a month.  Due to an ankle injury I hadn't even messed with it, but this time I decided to pull out the key and give it a try.

After a minute of cranking, it fired up!  It ran for about 30 seconds and died again.  The only way it would start is zero throttle and no choke.  Even at that I could smell the gas.  I ended up taking it around the block, and made a few observations:  Below 3-4k it runs like a Harley.  It's loud, glubs alot, pops, runs rough, and has little power.  It would hesitate and sputter until the 4k mark (or somewhere around there).  But then once you got it into the 5k+ the popping would go away, it ran smooth, and it took off.

Now I don't know much about bikes, but from what I have read here it sounds like the slow jets are the problem.  My guess (not worth anything) is that it is running rich.  Wouldn't that explain the backfiring sound?  It did seem to run a little better after a trip around the block, but even at idle you could hear it sputter (like it was missing?!?) and the tach would bob every second or so.

At any rate, I ordered the jet shim kit from DRP and it should be here any day.  Now that it is running (and I am walking) I was hoping to get it tuned up.  BTW, Gloveberg, if I can trust it to go 40 miles, would it be easier if I came your way instead?

Anyway, I have been pretty fired up since it fired up.  Just hope I can turn this Harley back into a Honda.  dc

I don't really want you riding it if it's running that bad.  Last thing you need is to get stuck between Sweetwater and Bronte in 97 degree heat  .

I work the next four nights but Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week I am off work but I think you said next week you are going on vacation right?  Let me know your schedule and I'll throw the few tools we'll need in my tailbag and shoot up there.  Lemme know a time frame and let's get that bike back running right.

Gloveberg-

You are correct, I will be out of pocket next week.  I will check my schedule and maybe we can meet up the week after next.  Assuming that it is still running, I could load it in the truck and bring it to you.  I don't mind either way, but I want to make it easy for you.  I think I have all the tools at we would need at my house, unless there are any carb-specific tools required.  I am sure we can discuss that later.

Also, should I be riding it around town (read: can I ride it)?  I don't want it to sit and stop working, but I also don't want to do any damage to other parts by riding it.  While the plugs are relatively new (maybe 2k on them) I was thinking that I may have to replace them since the overly rich mixture might foul them out.

Anyway, just some thoughts.  In the meantime I think I will try to wash and wax it.  Man I am anxious to ride!

BTW, the DD sim/jet kit has not arrived, but should be in very soon.  Thanks again, dc
