Just picked up an 82 Manga v45. A few questions

Hi everybody.  First post.  Not new to bikes, but new to the Magna.

I picked up a low mileage 82 Magna that had been sitting in the back of a barn for the past year.  It was my father in laws bike.

Here are the issues that I'm dealing with.

The rear brake is dragging.  I'm assuming that it is just from sitting and is a combination of brake dust and possibly rust.  I'm going to be taking the drum apart and checking it out to see if that is the problem or not.

The other problem is that the clutch level is not working.  I've never seen a clutch lever mechanism like this one before.  There is no clutch cable, just to wires that connect into the lever mechanism and a push button that is pushed in when the lever is pulled in.  Is this stock, or after market?  If it is stock what is the likely culprit, dirty conntectors?

Another "issue" is that the front and back blinker stalks on the left side are both cracked and broken.  Are these still available?

Any insight into these problems would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum DJ. There are a lot of first generation magna owners with a wealth of knowledge. You will get all the info you need, sometimes the forum is a little quite on the weekends, especially a good weather weekend. In the mean time poke around on the Moot website , tips and tricks section, members listing, there are a ton of first gen bikes to look at and enjoy while your waiting on an answer. Good luck..

DJ welcome to the MOOT forum....

The clutch is hydraulic, probably will need to flush it thoroughly with fresh fluid, also should check the clutch slave cylinder..

Lots of great 1st gen Magna owners here that I am sure will answer up...

Like Greg said the clutch is hydralic the slave cyclinder is probable the cluprit. The back brake might just need adjustment, and the turn signal stems are avaliable through JC Whitney I think they are about 6 to 8 bucks a peice. Welcome to the forum great bunch of people here with a world of knowledge, good luck with your Magna.

I'll be placing an order for a Hanyes manual very soon, but until then...

Where is the slave cylinder?  Let me guess it is probably inside the right side engine case cover???

DJ my guess is that someone will tell you where to go to download the magna service manual that will be a lot more detailed than a Haynes. Probably won't cost you anything.. Like I said weekends are sometimes slow give it a little time.. I'm still looking thru my stuff to see if I still have it, so far I have only found the V-65. I'll keep looking, but I know one of the first gen guys will jump in shortly..

Sorry, I guess the sarcasm didn't come through the computer very well.  I'm used to Yamaha's were they hide everything under the case covers so anytime you are trying to do something you need to drain the oil and get a new case cover gasket.  :x

I've looked through my clymers manual for the cb900 that I have and it seems to have a similair setup for the hydraulic clutch mechanism.  It appears that the slave cylinder should be on the left side of the bike down by the shifter.  I haven't pulled the cover off the clutch master cylinder yet to check the fluid level, so I don't know if it is just low or if there is an actual problem with the system.

DJ, it is on the lower left side of the engine behind the output shaft cover.  It has a banjo fitting to help bleed the air out.

Skip the Haynes manual, we should have here on the forum or the main MOOT site the manual to download (sorry I am at work cant look it up).

Well I found the maintenance manual download site off the main page of the MOOT.  However the 311.2 MB file size is pretty daunting for my extremly slow dial up connection.  It will take an estimated 36 hours to download.

Does anybody have it saved on to disk that they could send me?  I of course would pay for the shipping and any incidental charges for the disk and case.

DJ,  PM your mailing info to me and I will burn it onto a CD for you and mail it.  No charge, my job will 'donate' it.  hehe

As Greg pointed out, the slave is behind a small black cover just behind left engine cover.  Only one 10mm bolt and a couple grommets holding it on.  Easy job to flush it.  No different than bleeding your brakes.

DG - PM sent.  Thanks.  I've tried taking the cover off the clutch master cylinder, but the screw heads are really rusty and soft/stripped.  Looks like I'll be getting the dremel out to cut a slot for a flat tip screw driver.

Hey, DJ.  I would have posted sooner, but as was pointed out in an earlier post, I don't spend a lot of time in the forum on good weather weekends.

You can purchase slave cylinder, (as well as master cylinder), rebuild kits at Honda Direct Line, (www.hondadirectline.com).  They have a parts fiche so you can look up specific part numbers for your bike.  Some part numbers are discontinued, especially for our older bikes, but many times have been superceded by aniother part, and these guys can help you with that.  I always find it best to call the toll free number.  I've been able to get all of the parts I need for my '83 & '84.

The rear signal stems are impossible to find having been discontinued, (although I have not tried JC Whitney as suggested).  This is S-T-R-A-N-G-E to me, since it is still possible to get the front stems.  The closest and most suitable replacement I've been able to find for my '84 V45 is from Dennis Kirk; part #21-498.  These require that I grind off the end of the wire  conduit, so that they will mount flush against the side rail.  I prefer these because they are the same length as and look like the original stems and the mounting bolt is not too long where it can rub against the rear tire under the fender.  You will need to purchase 8mm x 1.25 hex nuts to mount them with.

Thanks for the reply.  I'll check out that part number for the stalks from DK.
