I have a 84' magna and it won't run past 2000 rpm.  The clutch started to slip so it sat over winter.  This spring when I went to start it up it would start but I couldn't rev it past 2000rpm.  I tried cleaning the carbs, new plugs, new fuel pump, new fuel line, I finally brought it in to a honda dealer and the cleaned the carbs, bowls, and jets.  They checked the valve timing they thought it was the spark advance coils and bought 2 of them and they didn't help.  They are now in the process of calling the 1-800 Honda help line cuz they don't have a clue.  The exhaust isn't plugged either.  Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks

It sounds like a carb issue but if you have looked into them and had a shop check them I would have to rule them out.  Besides timing and carbs I can only really think of compression, throttle travel, or carb linkages.  One other thought is that the rev limiter is messed up.  It might be stopping the electrical early instead of when it is supposed to.  I assume the limiter is in the Tach but maybe someone can confirm that.

When it revs up is is smooth or does it seem like one or more of the cylinders are missing?

Where the carbs vacuum sync'd and the pilot screws adjusted after the cleaning?

Hope this gives you something to look at.

Thanks for the info I will look into the carbs vacuum and make sure everything was adjusted right.  The bike is still at the shop and they haven't contacted me yet.  I will call them and ask if they adjusted everything after they took them off.  Thanks again!
