Air Horns

So, I am finally persuaded to install an air horn of some sort.  I have, unused, a cheapo system from Harbor Freight, but balked at the appearance factor and installation difficulty.   I have been looking at the "Bad Boy" from Wolo, and the Chrome Stebel Nautilus.  Do any of you have either of these on a 3rd gen Magna?

The factory horn is mounted pretty low, and takes all sorts of water abuse when I ford these little creeks, not to mention getting caught out in the rain.  So where would one mount either of these devices?  (They look a lot alike, by the way.)  Is it a simple mount, or do you have to finagle around to shoehorn it in?

What about wiring?  Do you just wire it up to the stock horn wire, or does it take a special relay and separate fuse?

Thanks in advance for your helpful comments.

It does take a special relay (relay may come with the Stebel) and I have seen people mount it in the same place as the stock horn.

I just installed a stebel a month ago.   Easy to install, make sure you install an inline fuse.   relay was included with the stebel.   I mounted the horn in the stock location using washers to push it out away from the exhaust.   I also reused the stock horn mounting bracket.   Someone might say that it's not strong enough but i haven't had any problems.   GOOD LUCK!

Lawrence;
If you want to play with a mount, you can always mount it where I mounted my horn..

I have the black Chrome Stebel Nautilus horn in the stock location.  Like jester, I had to put in a spacer to clear the exhaust.  It looks good and is quite effective.

Let me know and I'll get some pictures for you.

We always love pictures.  I may look at mounting it on the side below the fake air intake or where the stock horn is.

Herman, when you get time, I would love to see a picture or two.  I expect others would, too.

Thanks

Sometime I can be slow but I am not seeing how it bolts to the bike.

Do you bolt the black plastic thing and the horn slides down on that?

The back of my horn had a spot where the head of the bolt fit into.   I then put the washers on the bolt and then the stock horn mount.   I tightened it to spec torque and mounted the stock mount back on the bike.

I used the stock horn wires for the control circuit and used 12 awg wire (fused) from the battery to the relay and from the relay to the horn.   You can either take a wire from the horn to a grounding point or back to the battery.

Hope that helps.

You can see the horn down by the engine guard, right behind the front tire.  I have the black horn, not the chrome one.

I have a spacer to move the horn away from the exhaust.  It's probably about 1.5".  A little more than needed, but I didn't feel like cutting it.

Below you can see where I mounted the electrical component.   It's not mounted, I just got it to fit snug behind that ground wire.

Great pics, Nick.  Thanks so much!.  I am ordering one of these tonight.  Think I'll go with the black one as you have.

Oh, and just a FYI, I had to cut the nut to get the factory horn off.  I couldn't get a good grip.  It's a thin nut that holds the factory horn on the mounting plate.  Easy enough as long as you don't want to keep the factory horn.

Magnum Magna

Yes, Thanks for the pictures.
