Hootmon,
I have three, 3/8" holes drilled in each of my mufflers with everything else still in place. I run a K&N air filter, I have a total of three shims on my needles, 40 pilot jets, 105 main jets and three turns out on my air/fuel screws.  The bike runs awesome, the plugs look great and on a 500 mile ride two weekends ago I averaged 53 miles per gallon.  I also really like the sound.

I don't see how you guys get such good mileage. I have ran only one tank through my 01 but I avg 38.5 mpg, the same as on my 94. I will keep checking and yes i know how to use a calculator.

Doc.Jet,
I may be doing 3 shims also. went to the Honda shop to confirm the other needle jet listed for this bike is for the Cal. model. I'm thinking which way I want to go here. Another fella, Lance, had three shims and his mpg dropped. I don't know if he can tell a difference in the way it runs or not.

Terry,  Just riding my bike around town and back and forth to work (about 10 miles each way in city traffic) I usually get between 38 and 43 miles per gallon. The 500 mile trip I went on was through the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas and I averaged a pretty constant 55 miles per hour when getting the 53 MPG.  We did one stretch out on Interstate 40 (running 70 mph) and I got 43 MPG on that one tank but as soon as we got back on the twisty mountain roads I went right back to 53 MPG again.  I was really happy because when I first got my bike I was getting in the low 50's per gallon but it wasn't running right.  After working on my carbs and getting it tuned properly my mileage dropped into the high 30's and low 40's but I hadn't had it out on a good trip until the one I mentioned.  I was very pleased when I saw these fuel mileage numbers.

Terry, since returning to 2 total shims my plugs have looked better.  I also turned my pilot screws back down to just under 3 turns from a light seat.  I was at 3 stong turns out, now probably 2-7/8 or so.   Bike runs great.  I have not gone thru a tank of fuel though since these adjustments, so I will keep everyone informed as to fuel mileage.   It also could be the gas we are getting these days...   Planning a run on sunday, so I should have some numbers come monday..      Back to my original question, 8)      Has anyone drilled holes in their exhaust after they have removed the resonators??   Did it sound any better??  Thanks..

I in the beginning many years ago, had drilled even spaced holes between the rivets and thought it sounded OK, till my brother said it sounded like a Volkswagon.  I replaced the endplates pretty quickly after that LoL.  Then did the resonator removal.

Too Many holes = VW sound.  :P Not enough air for all the holes.

I was getting pretty low mileage until i read the owners manual which stated that by the time you reach 35 mph your supposed to be in 5th gear.    When i started riding like that I would get around 40 in town and 50 on the highway.    so that's my story and I'm sticking with it heh

I did a similar mod to my wife's VTX1300C (Clayton Mod), and it sounds pretty good, but that's a V-twin.  I'd like to get a little throatier sound, but not as loud as Chad's Vance & Hines pipes.  Anyway, I'm a cheap bastard and can't see paying the prices any of the aftermarket pipes charge.  I don't think I want to remove the resonators like some have done, but just want it a little louder.  What is the consensus on size and number of holes for best sound?

I believe that is coming out of this subject post...

Ba,

Drill the holes as I outlined on the first post, you won't be disappointed. I have not heard anyone else's, I have heard these, they sound good. But just as these are drilled, if you do something different, I don't know.

When I did mine I started with 3/16" holes and increased them incrementally up to 1/4", this is when the "Volkswagon" statement was made and I abondoned them..
I was actually happy with the sound till he said that just FYI, however I could not continue to ride a "Volkswagon" sounding setup..
