IMO it is important to use as close to the exact amount as possible.  I measured mine out for each side.
If you are only changing the oil and not replacing the seals, be sure you compress/decompress the forks several times to be sure you get all of the old oil out.

I put in the progressive fork springs last night.  I cut my spacers to 5-7/16 .  Was a little rough putting on the fork caps but I managed.  I put in the pro honda 10 wt fork oil.  I also put loctite on the drain screws.  After I was done, I noticed that the service manual had a replace sign beside the washers. I instead had already reused the original washers and completed the project. The forks are not leaking.  Am I the only one that did not replace the washers on the drain bolts?  Opinions?

I think you will like you cut the spacers longer. I doubt if I replaced my washers either, can't remember, are they crush washers?

Yes they are Terry!   That's what made me cringe when I read the service manual.

ha ha hah .........I had a 12 hp Murray riding mower for 17 years and never changed the oil.  I always figured the mower would fall apart before the Briggs commercial engine.  I finally gave it to my next door neighbor and he's still using it.  It doesn't smoke except when you first start it.  Amazing.  :?

No need for a reason other than the journey.

I have installed several pairs of the springs and not replaced the washer on the drain plug and have had no ill effects.
