O.K so other than tools and a knowing mind(Jerry I will prob take you up on the offer as soon as I can) what else should I get, carb cleaner(?) what else should I consider while I have them off?
While you have them off I would go ahead and rejet them to eliminate the mid range hesitation if your going to go back to stock pipes with a k&n filter I would go with 105 main jets and 42 idle jets and shim the needle with one extra shim you can get the jets at jetsrus.com for about 6 dollars a jet for idle jets you need 4 and about 2.50 a jet for main jets you need 4 and the shims you can get for free I have some. Tools I have some and can bring them with me or you can come to my house and we can do it here, when ever you are ready just let me know and we will set up a date and time and get it done. carb cleaner yes you could use some.

Jerry thanks for the info I will get the jets ordered and see about a swap with Charles on the exhaust and then we can set up a time, we may have to do it at my house if I am not cleared to ride when I get the parts. I live in Bedford right by the 183&121 split.

I don't know, but you may need some new exhaust gaskets as well if you are going to swap out exhausts.. just a thought.

This pic is on the left side underneath where the exhaust starts upward to the head(#2 cylinder) Cant be seen on bike

First I want to say that a shim on the carb needle and an adjustment of the pilot jet will help the low and mid range issues.

The main jets will help upper mid to high end.  You are already running lean so a K&N air filter will only exaggerate this situation.

A switch to stock exhaust (especially since you want quieter) will help slow down the air flow resulting in a less lean running bike.

IF you decide to go to stock exhaust, K&N, then I would go for the main jets to a 105, if you decide to keep the stock air filter then I would stay with the stock 102 Jets, and shim the carbs, adjust, and clean..

O.K. me and Charles swapped exhaust and I finally got around to putting the stock set back on my bike, when I started it I have a random miss on cylinder #3 and bogs when revved up, unless done slowly. I was wondering what would cause this, Charles mentioned checking the coil for that cylinder, was wondering how to do this, I also figure on getting together with Jerry in the future and cleaning and shimming the carbs per what Greg recommends.

Any ideas?

I would clean the carbs first and do your jetting coils on a 3rd gen are not prone to failure!!!!

Is this the same problem you had in the beginning of this thread, or has it changed? The reason I mentioned swapping the coils around was because way back when I had a miss on my 87 the first thing I was told (by mootsters) to check before I went tearing into carbs was to swap the coils around to see if the miss moved or stayed with the same cylinder. Having done both the coil swap and carb cleaning, it's my opinion that swapping coils temperarely was quite a bit quicker and easier than tearing down the carbs, unless you intend to clean them anyway. And I'm sure that Allen dismissing my suggestion as unnecessary was not meant to be disrespectful .

Just jerking your chain Allen :D :D :D

As asked, is this the same problem you started with..
The bogs issue may be that the idle jets were turned out more because of the modified exhaust.. Someone will chime in on how many turns out a stock bike should have..

This is the same problem just acts different, now the miss is totally random. It will idle fine and then pop thru the exhaust, then back to running fine. It only does it on the #3 cylinder. If I can figure a way to record it and post I will.

Charles-love the way the exhaust sound, nice deep throaty sound to them.
