Hello everyone!I'm new to the forum, and I have a question for the experts or anyone else that could help.I have in my garage a 1984 V65 with a little over 41000 on it.Its been in storage for over ten years and the owner has decided to sell it.After oil and filter change, removed carbs and cleaned them, new tires, and front signal stems the bike is ready to sell.It runs great except for a clatter or rattle behind the clutch cover. Its real noticeable cold, but when the bike gets warm you can barely hear it.I'm running 10-40 in it and thought a thicker oil might help.I don't just want to hide the noise and the new owner get stuck with a major problem.Could this be clutch rattle, or tensioners ,or something worse.Did not know if syncing the carbs would help like on the old SOHC 750's.If anyone is in the Lubbock,TX. area and could come take a look E-mail me.
Thanks,
Robert

If the bike had sat for that long of time the clutch spring squeezed the oil out of the friction plates more than likely, basically they are dry.

Is it motorcycle specific oil?  Or automotive oil?  Automotive oil's a lot of the time have friction modifiers in them and causes ugly things in a MC wet clutch system.

To tell the the truth I didn't check the oil.The owner brought it over with the bikes, I just put it in.Even though I've ridden the bike for two months now in the morning and at night just to warm it up, and then put it on the curb with a for sale sign by it.I know it needs to be taken out and ridden to blow the cobwebs out of it.I just didn't want to cause damage to the engine. The owner has another 84 V65 for me to work on that has sat up for over ten years.Just wanted to make sure I do a good job for him. He's making me a heck of a deal on a 1983 V65 with 13000 miles on it, thats been sittng in his garage for the 10 years also.I can't wait to get my hands on that thing!!!I've been waiting since 1986 for one of these things(that's when i took my first ride on one).
Thanks for the help!

I have heard a bad starter clutch rattle and make noise like a loose spring and timing chain.  The starter clutch is very easy to change out if you have a spare one.  I am not sure if the noise would go away when heated up.

It could also be in need of a valve adjustment.  Are you sure the noise is from the clutch cover?  If not valves will make noise and quiet down after warming up.

Syncing the carbs will help smooth the bike out.  If it is out of sync it could make some noise.

Yeah, the noise is def the side cover i used the poor boy stethoscope method.Maybe the starter clutch is the reason the starter doesn't grab everytime. Thanks I'll pull out the manual and start studying up!
I checked on the oil the owner brought over and it is automotive oil with an SF rating and he said that would not cause the noise and that the oil would be fine. His bike his oil is the way I see it.So we'll see.
Thanks for the info!

Hi again I recently got the other 84 Magna running after 10 years of garage storage. The second one has the same right side engine noise but it is alot worse than the first one.It comes and goes.one minute it won't make the noise, pull the clutch lever and let it out and the noise appears! Then it will be making the noise pull the clutch lever and it goes away, let it out ,sometimes it stops sometimes it doesn't.Put it in gear there is no noise at all.
Has anyone else had this problem if so how did you fix it?Please help!
Thanks!
Robert

Symptoms suggest clutch basket..

In my experience SF automotive oil caused harsher shifts and more noise in my 96 Magna.  I switched to MC specific NON synthetic oil and it helped but not as much as the SYNTHETIC MC specific oil has.

Personally for me, its synthetic MC specific oil in all my bikes.

I will talk to the owner again about the oil.I think the same way!He has an 83 V65 with 13000 miles that I'm getting out of this deal(that has also sat for 10 years!),and I asked him if I could get it running with the right oil and hopefully show him the difference it makes. He doesn't want to put anymore $$$ in them than he has to! Thanks for the info!

I agree with Greg... clutch basket.

I lost count...how many v65's total does he have in his garage?   8-)

There are 3 Magnas, two 84's and one 83.Three trail 90's,a 66,68 and a 69 model. One 1980 Kawasaki G-1 Classic. A 1973 Z-1 900 and a 1973 Hodaka Combat Wombat on the way.Thats why I'm trying so hard to get the two 84's running and sold for this one guy.I need some room for moe stuff.I found another guy who has a shed with around 30 plus bikes in it that have been sitting for years(thats where the Z-1 900 and the Hodaka are coming from).Mostly older 2-strokes,Yamaha and Kawasakis.A few Moto-Guzzi's.One or two CB550's.And a 64 or 66 SS El Camino and one dead cow.He is wanting to sell all of them(except the cow and the Super Sport!).If ya'll would like I'll post a list when we get back over there and sort through them if anyone is interested.
Thanks all!

List hell; we want pic's of the whole lot.  I'm interested in the old CB-550's, if they are early 70's models.  Where are the bikes located?  8)

Yes the three magnas are V65's.I'm getting the 83 out of the first deal. When that one is done I can move on to this other one with all the bikes in the barn.So far I believe I'm getting a 1973 Z-1 900 and a 1973 Hodaka Combat Wombat! The Kawasaki is pretty rough, but restorable.I know there is a RD400 in pretty decent shape. The one CB550 I think may be a 69, but not 100% sure on anything yet.The old building doesn't have any lights in it, and we didn't have much time to look.I only have one picture so far and it isn't very good(taken with my phone). When we go back next week(I pray we go!)I'll take the camara. As soon as he figures out how he wants to go about this I will let ya'll know.I'm in Lubbock and they are 50 miles East of me.The owner is in hurry to get them moved because they are rolling out the door on thier own!!!The fully dressed V1000 Moto-Guzzi was on its side by the door when we got there the other day.And I know the dead cow didn't do it!I don't know how to post pics on here yet if you E-mail me I can send you the one pic I do have.
Thanks!

I just learned to post a pic myself thanks to these guys.  If you can upload the pic to a PC go to tinypic.com and upload it free there.  They will then give you a "message board" link to copy and paste into your message hear.  Easy breazy.  :)
