Factory recall item?

Hey guys:

I was riding on Saturday (went to a couple of biker bars...harley's only haha).

Anyhow, I was the center of attention at the bar because of my 1st generation Magna.  I had like 5 guys (at different times) come up to me and say "WOW, I bought that bike when it was brand new, and I loved it". 

One guy actually showed me his scar on his leg from crashing at high speed on his V65.  The reason he said he crashed was because the "clamp" (bolted with 4 bolts) on top of the fender (attached to the forks) on the front tire was CRACKED.  Apparently, this clamp fell apart at high speeds and caused him to crash.

Well, low behold, my "clamp" (don't know the real part name) is also cracked. 

He told me that Honda put out a factory recall for this part. 

Is this true?  Should I get it replaced?

Call Honda and see if they will still replace it.

Buy an aftermarket reinforced unit and get it change in the near future.

Generally Honda will honor recalls for about 5 years.. I think you're a little late..
I ran into this with my '94 which has a Technical Service Bulletin to drill hole in the cam caps to increase oil flow.. Honda would have done the work for free, but the 5 years has expired..

Dan - buy the aftermarket and change it Soooooon, unless of course you want a scar to show to other folks in the future..

I have seen the one for the V65....didn't realize the V45 was the same. I would also do it immediately as in order now, the V65 I was told runs about 30 dollars, a SS plate that goes under the stock brace.

Do we have a copy of that "Technical Service Bulletin" for the early model 3rd gens?? Mines a 94 and i'm not sure if the caps were ever drilled. Does anyone have pics of what it looks like before and after drilling maybe?? Or just a shot of what the drilled caps look like.

The problem was only with the '94
If the dealer did the work, they were supposed to take a center punch and punch a mark right below the serial number on the neck of the bike.. Take a look...
Mine has NOT been done and I have ~65K on the bike - No issues.. (Knock on wood)

Well mines a 94, ill take a look when i get home for a center punch mark below the serial, and I have a little over 65k.

However, I do hear a knock from the engine every now and a again from idle-4k then disappears above but if i come back down to idle it will be there still. I find tipping the bike from side to side quickly, seems to make the noise stop for the remainder of the ride usually wouldn't reappear until the bike got started cold again.

I also changed over to "Lucas Motorcycle 20-50W Semi-Synthetic" and i haven't heard the knock once since chaging it over to a semi-syn. Previously my Magna only ran on mineral oil "20-50W" not sure what brand the previous owners used I used Lucas Oil tried the full synthetic seemed to make the knock worse but i had a broken timing chain tensioner so maybe ill try full synthetic again this season now that I've replaced both my tensioners.

I had a 94 and not done to my knowledge with 60K, no issues.
