A different sound

Reading through all the posts but don't seem to find one that fits my sound. 
My 95 is making a sort of popiing/clacking sound as I am letting the clutch out when starting from a stop.
3 or 4 times then it stops.  No jerking of the bike like it's a clutch, it seems to be coming from the left side where the drive sprocket is.
Doesn't do it in any other gear.
Thoughts?......

How is your chain tension? Too loose of a chain?
Is the bolt on the front sprocket tight?

Chain tension is good.
Haven't torn into anything yet, it just started doing it friday.

More than likely the chain go to the rear sprocket and pull the chain straight back on the rear sprocket if it comes away the links are worn and the chain needs to replaced.

Okay, accidently solved this one. The chain seemed ever so slightly loose so adjusted it, rode it, adjusted it, rode it.......thought I had it solved. Rode to work the next day and it was the same as it was before I ever started. Realized it had been a while since it had been lubed so just did a quick spray with some lube and that solved all my problems.

Sounds like you may have some tight spots in your chain then...

Lube is super important on the chain..  With it your chain will last longer than without it.  ASSUMING you keep it adjusted properly.  With that said, I personally believe most folks adjust their chains to death.  I personally liked to keep mine slightly on the loose side, slightly..  In other words I would rather have it on the loose side rather than tight.

I see you've found your solution so all is good, but for me that type of noise has always been some sort of chain noise.  Either loose chain, dirty chain, or dry chain.  Any of these can cause chain noise, over and above "normal" chain noise that is.  I've had cases were a chain adjust fixes it, and also cases where a clean and lube fixes it (never clean without lubing myself, so not sure if it's actually 3 cases or 2).

I usually use the noise to let me know that I need to do some chain maint.

Yes, I normally clean and lube it on a somewhat regular basis, just failed to do it in this case.  Hopefully won't have to worry about it anymore as I have a potential buyer coming tomorrow. Looking to step up to a VTX 1300.
